sd-card-images's Issues

Orange Pi One Plus

Orange Pi One Plus H6 no boot neither image Debian bookworm/Ubuntu jammy

Odroid C2 Ubuntu images stuck on Starting kernel...

Odroid C2 successfully boots with Debian bookworm image but Ubuntu jammy, lunar, and mantic images stops at Starting kernel.... Serial console show no progress. Tried SanDisk Ultra and Samsung EVO SDHC cards. The only difference is Uncompressing Kernel Image in U-Boot output with Ubuntu images.

Booting on Nanopi M4 shows an error...

Hi,
I have the original Nanopi M4 and can't get it to boot using your Ubuntu Jammy or Luna images...

Booting using - wget https://dl.sd-card-images.johang.se/boots/2023-09-01/boot-nanopi_m4.bin.gz
and - wget https://dl.sd-card-images.johang.se/debians/2023-09-11/ubuntu-lunar-arm64-ochei7.bin.gz

Shows this error:
U-Boot TPL 2023.07-rc6-dirty (Sep 01 2023 - 00:06:59)
sdram_init: LPDDR3 - 933MHz failed!
rk3399_dmc_init DRAM init failed -22
Missing DTB

Seems to suggest this boot image is for Nanopi RC6?

Thanks

Richard

ROCK PI 4 PLUS v1.73

I have a board marked "ROCK PI 4 PLUS v1.73" that I can't get to work. I tried the images for "ROCK Pi 4 model B" and "ROCK Pi 4 model C" (tried both Bullseye and Bookworm) and in all cases I get solid green + blue LED light and no HDMI output. It does boot with rockpi-4b-debian-buster-xfce4-arm64-20220801-0347-gpt.img from Radxa but I would really prefer to run pure Debian on it.

Output from lshw:
https://pastebin.com/fx5Y3i7f

Output from dmesg:
https://pastebin.com/E4uGmvTb

(Maybe this should be seen as a feature request but from what I have found out this board is a variant of ROCK Pi 4B, so I guess these images are supposed to work?)

Device support question

Wanted to know if a ( thehelm email server) HELM box ( rk3399 EVB board -> rock 4 core ) can be added to devices that are supported by this community?

Thank you.

A10-Olinuxino-lime

First of all thank you for your hard work,

I've booted into the A10-Olinuxino-lime image, and I'm unable to get apt to work, it says Temporary failure resolving. It appears I'm connected and have an IP on eth0 (Can see it in the ifconfig). Can't ping since ping isn't installed.

Can confirm same ethernet port connection setup works with official Olimex images.

What could it be?

Orange Pi Zero onboard XR819 WiFi card non existent

Hi I'm using current Bookworm for Orange Pi Zero (2023-01-01 / 2023-01-09) but the onboard XR819 WiFi chip is nowhere to be seen. I edited /etc/apt/sources.list to include non-free, ran update, upgrade and dist-upgrade (nothing new installed) and rebooted but I still get this:

root@debian:~# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

end0 no wireless extensions.

root@debian:~#

Any idea if or how I can enable the XR819 WiFi in your build? Note the XR819 chip has a dubious reputation, however in my experience it works well with Armbian (used daily to stream internet radio URL)

BananaPi M2+ Wi-Fi not found in default kernel

Firstly, thank you for these images, they are great and your instructions you provide for creating the SD Card is very short and sweet, but more importantly it works !

I created an image for the BananaPi M2+ (H3 processor) and the image boots fast and loads the ethernet network perfectly, but I cannot find the Wi-Fi interface at all and am having nothing but problems trying to get it up and running; are there instructions on how to load the kernel module to get this device recognised?

Thank you in advance, Rick

Please switch HTTP links to HTTPS on image downloads

Hello,

My browser warned me about insecure links and refused to download the files. And I'd say it's not just another hurdle that "the browser people" have invented to bother us, it is actually insecure and is a bad practice. Especially as the "dl" site supports HTTPs just fine, as confirmed by copy-pasting the URLs and changing HTTP to HTTPS. So why not?

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

(initramfs)

I've built a debian using debootstrap manually and, same error appears. Initramfs doesn't contain full mmc core support, and there is no mmc-core packages for arm64 in debian sources. So I gave up my work to use your project. But it seems that here is the same problem.

Asus Tinkerboard does not boot Debian Testing

I believe something has changed with u-boot or something because both my Raspberry Pi 4 and my Asus Tinkerboard (RK3288) do not boot with debian testing. The build scripts are not working correctly, u-boot does not even boot on either board. I tested other distros and they work fine.

adding support for a new board

admittedly I don't know enough about what it takes to build a new image so apologize for the rookie questions

how would one go about adding support for a board that isn't listed in boards.csv? namely the orange pi 5

How to activate/enable Orange Pi (Zero Plus) Extension Board (USB2/USB3/IR)?

Hello,
i have "bookworm" running on my Orange Pi Zero Plus. Fine. :-)

But the Extension does not work. The USB Ports are not working. (Only 5V Power)
Expansion Board Link:
http://www.orangepi.org/html/hardWare/otherAccessories/details/Orange-Pi-Expansion-Board-For-Zero.html

I learned to add an "Overlay". Like this:
https://forum.armbian.com/topic/3718-orange-pi-zero-dev-kernel-does-not-see-expansion-usb-ports/

But how to do it in this Distribution?
/boot/config.txt?
Adding a *.dtb File?
Where to add?
How to make?

The "sun50i-h5-orangepi-zero-plus.dts" is available, but how to handle/install it?

Thanks.

Banana Pi M2 Berry does not boot

Hi,

I tried your image for Banana Pi M2 Berry.
Unfortunately this does not work.
I think this is because the boot partition is empty.
The old images from banana-pi.org have the kernel and boot config on the boot partition.
Is there a way to boot from the root partition?

I've tried to use the debian bookworm image, with the bootloader, for the AML-S905X-CC (Le Potato) v1 but when I try to boot it gives me the following error:

Again, thanks for your amazing work.

Some Questions about Leez

Hello bro, thank you very much for building the image, which has benefited me greatly.
This has rejuvenated my leezpi.
But this has also brought some minor issues, and I hope to receive your help.
The typec interface that was supposed to work in USB 3.0 mode can only run in USB 2.0 mode.
Looking forward to your.

A13-Olinuxino-MICRO boot issue

I followed all instruction to make the SD card image and dd it into micro SD card, but here is what I got in continuous loop:

U-Boot 2020.07 (Aug 27 2020 - 00:42:52 +0000) Allwinner Technology

Trying to boot from MMC1

Images lately won't boot correctly.

My La Frite (512MB) is not able to correctly boot with the images on your website. The boot goes on to "Starting kernel" or maybe it is "Loading kernel" but nothing happens after that. Your earlier images that I used a couple of months ago did not have this issue.

I have tried several medias but the same thing happens.

Bpi m2 Berry stable bookworm doesn't boot

Discussed in #57

Do i have to point drive or partition when dd if=sd-card.img of=/dev/sdXXX ?
I'm pointing empty drive, respectfully not mounted

Libre ROC-RK3328-CC not booting

I created sd-images for all three available Debian releases following the instructions (cat a b > c)
None of them boot.
The Libre board shows solid yellow and red LEDS (no heartbeat), no HDMI output and network is offline.

The sd-images look alright, FAT32 partition and linux partition, the linux filesystem shows no errors.
The FAT partition is not formatted.

The Libre board boots Raspbian and Armbian with success from the same microSD cards.

How can I help solve this?

Thanks for the images that you provide here - found it really useful!

I'm currently trying to enlarge the / partition, by default it's only ~1.8G for me while I'm using a 32 GB SD card in my banana pi. I tried multiple tutorials to enlarge the file system with fdisk - but it ends up always bricking the system, and it won't boot anymore. Example tutorial: https://erlerobotics.gitbooks.io/erle-robotics-erle-brain-a-linux-brain-for-drones/content/en/tutorials/expandingfilesystem.html

Also tried to install raspi-config which seems to do exactly what is written in the tutorial above, result is the same and the system won't boot anymore.

Waveshare USB / ETH hub hat not supported on Banana-Pi M2 Zero Bookworm

Trying to use the Waveshare ETH/USB hat (the version that uses a dual micro USB connector NOT pogo pins) with the 10-10-22 img, but connected keyboards or wireless key/mouse dongles don't work - whereas a cheap USB hub connected with an OTG adapter works fine with devices.
Is it related to the RTL8152 USB Ethernet on this hub?

ROC-RK3328-CC Images No Display

Hello, I have tried both Bookworm and Bullseye images for the ROC-RK3328-CC and I'm not able to get my display to work. The keyboard lights up and I see the Ethernet port blinking. The monitor is an Acer GN246HL hooked up w/ HDMI.

systemd-timesyncd is not installed by default

First, thanks for making these images, I'm trying to use it to build an Octoprint server on an old PCDuino3 nano.

It boots perfectly and seems to run reasonably well, but it seems NTP does come up on start and sync the time. The lack of synced time creates issues with SSL certificate validations which impacts the ability to download packages including ntpdate.

I can manually set the date by copying it from another machine

# Time Synced machine
date +%s # copy time from a synced machine

# On the PCduino - set the time to something close
date -s "$(date -d @1670738614)"

After ntpdate is installed, I can manually sync time by using ntpdate tick.utoronto.ca , obviously it would be far better if the images automatically synced their time.

Bookworm(stable) not bootable, SID works (Orange Pi Zero Plus, and maybe more). Infos+Workaround

Hello,

the bookworm image is not bootable, the SID image works. Could you please check it. :-)

Maybe i found the problem, description following. On the other hand you can bring "bookworm" to run with a workaround. See information below.

I only testet "Orange Pi Zero Plus" from here:
https://sd-card-images.johang.se/boards/orange_pi_zero_plus.html

If you follow the Instructions (Download and zcat) the bookworm Image starts, the Ethernet LED are flashing, but no IP is assigned via DHCP. (SID Image in this way works). The bootprocess hangs! I have no serial Console. (The problem is not the image itself, but the creation of the SD Card)

I think the "problem" is the different image size between "Bookworm" and "SID" and maybe the "bookworm" Images does not fit into the created partition!?

To reproduce the error, you do not need an Orange PI Zero Plus, because the filesystem on SD Card looks damaged:

  1. Download and zcat bookworm from instructions, write to SD Card. Keep SD Card in PC. Try to mount the Main partion in your PC. Filesystem access NOT possible. (gparted also find errors in Main SD Card Partition)

  2. Download and zcat SID from instructions, write to SD Card. Keep SD Card in PC. Try to mount the Main partion in your PC. It works. You can access the filesystem.

Conclusion: The concatenation of "bookworm" image is faulty.

.

My personal workaround to make "bookworm" run is copy the Main Partition manually:

1. # Extract files
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 33554432 Jun 18 14:02 boot-orange_pi_zero_plus.bin
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 256405633 Jun 18 14:02 debian-bookworm-arm64-oojoh7.bin.gz
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 3800000000 Jun 18 20:18 sd-card.img

2. # Copy ONLY Bootimage to SD Card
			# Then you have a valid Partition Table. Second Partition is visible now, but is empty. (Of course)

dd if=/boot-orange_pi_zero_plus.bin /dev/sdX

3. # Format second (ca. 3.5GB) Partition with ext4 and Attribut "boot"
			# I used "gparted". Follow the instruction. Commandline will also work.

Something like: "mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdX2" # Not tested

4. # Mount bookworm Image (downloaded) on loop Device

fdisk -lu sd-card.img # bookworm image (Extracted from debian-bookworm-arm64-oojoh7.bin.gz)

Gerät Boot Anfang Ende Sektoren Größe Kn Typ
sd-card.img1 8192 65535 57344 28M c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
sd-card.img2 * 65536 7419903 7354368 3,5G 83 Linux

Calculate 65536*512 = 33554432

losetup -f # Find first free loop device XX (Details see link below)

losetup -o 33554432 /dev/loopXX sd-card.img

fsck -fv /dev/loopXX	# If you like, you can file check. I never did it.

mkdir /mnt/bookworm-image

mount /dev/loopXX /mnt/bookworm-image	# Mount extracted bookworm Image File into Filesystem

5. # Mount the second SD Card Partition. The empty created (and formatted) Partition.

mkdir /mnt/sd-card-partiton
mount /dev/sdX2 /mnt/sd-card-partiton

			# Now both (Downloaded Image and SD Card) Partitionen are mounted into Filesystem. You can copy.

6. # Copy Data

cp -p -R /mnt/bookworm-image/. /mnt/sd-card-partiton

7. Umount and Eject. Use Card in Orange Pi Zero Plus. - It boots and works.

Chroot error when building debian

When I run the command stated in the README file to build debian, I get the following error

chroot: failed to run command '/bin/sh': exec format error

Anyone who has an idea on how to fix/debug this?

Date is invalid on Debian Bookworm for Odroid N2+ and breaks apt

#8 refers - data in resolv.conf is still wrong in Bookworm on Odroid N2+. (same as N2 just with faster processor)
I know the N2+ is on the network because ifconfig reports an IP address and I can ping that IP from another PC on the network.

I can diagnose the fault but I don't know how to fix this in the absence of a text editor.
PS I am really excited to find your images.... Now I just have to get the networking working...

Any help fixing this would be appreciated.

Images should not come with pre-generated SSH host keys

From what I understand, SSH host keys are generated automatically when openssh is installed.
However, this is quite bad, because users might not realize it and use private keys that are not actually private.
I recalled that OpenSSH generated new ones if it couldn't find them, but from a quick search it seems I'm wrong (but I haven't tried, either).
If it doesn't work, I suggest adding a script to do that on the first boot (I can try when I have more time), or at least mention it in the download page, with the other instruction.

That said, these images are great, thanks for this project!

Moving the OS to USB storage (Allwinner-based Orange Pi Win / Prime)

Hello,

I'm trying to move the OS from the SD card to an USB-connected SSD. This is using the bookworm image.

Typically, what would be enough for this, is to delete all partitions from the SD card (leaving only u-boot there), and have those partitions on USB disk instead. Then u-boot is smart enough to not only check SD, but also USB storage for the partition to boot from.

However, on Orange Pi Win u-boot does not see any storage devices connected at all.

On Orange Pi Prime the boot-up from USB starts (the kernel is found and launched), but then appears to stop indefinitely on ~6th second of boot-up with only some regular messages on screen, about various USB devices being detected and initialized. No errors or timeouts (or I did not wait long enough).

What else might be required? Has anyone have any success with this? Thanks

Raspberry Pi 4B does not boot Debian Testing

I have installed to an sd card and a USB drive and neither will boot. Both boot to the rainbow screen and will not continue. Power supply is more than adequate, used different storage medias, tried both hdmi ports, etc. I cannot provide logs because no logs are being generated. I don't even know if it is loading anything from the media, I'm not too familiar with rpi boot process. Ethernet does not request IP address either, so I know that it's not the hdmi not working, it's not even booting the kernel. I had this problem like 6 months ago with these builds but I just thought my sd card was bad or something so I didn't try any further. Today I spent a considerable amount of time working on this and have concluded it is these images, not my storage media. Raspbian installs and boots just fine.

Banana PI M5 boot error

Hello Johan
I've tried your newest images on my Banana PI M5 board.
The EMMC is unformatted, I only use an 16 GB SD-Card.
As you can see at the end of the log, there is an error with
initializing the SD-Card, whatever that means.
Tried with Bookworm and Jammy, and different SD-Cards,
same error. Any idea ?

Reboot does not work.

Hello.
Upon initiating a reboot via /usr/sbin/reboot or /usr/sbin/shutdown -r now the system halts, but does not reboot. A hard power cycle is required to get back up and running.

I've tested the Khadas VIM3 image as well as the ODROID N2 image, and both exhibit this behavior.

I tried reinstalling systemd-sysv just for good measure, but no success.

Any chance others are seeing this behavior?

Thanks for the great project!!

Empty /boot partition, kernel and u-boot files in rootfs

First off, thanks a lot for this impressive work.

I tried to build an image for Banana Pi BPI-M2-BERRY with Bullseye using:

sudo docker run --rm -v /tmp/sd-images:/artifacts sd-images build-boot \
    banana_pi_m2_berry allwinner-v40 bananapi_m2_berry_defconfig arm-linux-gnueabihf

sudo docker run --rm -v /tmp/sd-images:/artifacts sd-images build-debian \
    debian armhf bullseye

Two binary files were created, as expected, I concatenated them using:

zcat /tmp/sd-images/boot-banana_pi_m2_berry.bin.gz \
     /tmp/sd-images/debian-bullseye-armhf-XXXXXX.bin.gz > sd-card.img

After flashing sd-card.img to my SD card the device didn't boot. When inspecting the file systems of both .bin files I noticed that:

  1. /boot partition in boot-...bin.gz is empty
  2. /boot directory in debian-...bin.gz contains kernel and u-boot files
  3. trying to move the files from debian-...bin.gz to boot-...bin.gz failed due to a lack of space in the 32M /boot partition

I then tried the same for a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W and the final image turned out to be structurally ok (I didn't boot it though): two partitions (vfat and ext4), boot files in vfat boot partition and /boot mount point in ext4 rootfs empty.

Finally I ran another attempt for a Banana Pi BPI-M2-ZERO, but it failed for the same problem my initial attempt (Banana Pi BPI-M2-BERRY) failed, vfat /boot partition is empty.

I also checked your downloadable binaries for the two Banana Pis, same problem (mount them and check yourself).

Debian 11 command not found for everything.

I just installed an image on my banana pi m2m, but it has 0 usability. None of the commands work not even sudo and apt install sudo returns with error unable to locate package sudo.

Not Respecting DHCP-Supplied Domain

I have an assortment of Raspberry Pis (RPis) and a couple of ODroids (C2, C4) on a network managed by an OpenWRT-based gateway running DNSMasq to provide DHCP/DNS services. In each case, I edit /etc/hostname with the desired <hostname> after flashing an image to the boot medium.

The RPis run a mix of images from RaspberryPi.com/software and raspi.debian.net/tested-images/. The DHCP-supplied Domain is picked up by these images, and hostname -f returns <hostname>.<domain>.

I'm trying out the ODroid C4 image from here. It seems to ignore the DHCP-supplied Domain: hostname -f on this device simply returns <hostname>.

Any pointers, please, on how to have the ODroid pick up the DHCP-supplied Domain in similar fashion to the other images?

A64 olimex: copy SD to eMMC

Hello

I have installed the latest Bullseye image on a SD for my A64 Olimex w/ eMMC and I'm having trouble running the image from the eMMC.

I have copied back the original "olinuxino-sd-to-emmc" scripts onto the SD card and except that I had to regenerate a /etc/fstab file so it mentions UUIDs, the process works without errors.

Unfortunately when trying to boot from the eMMC, first nothing comes out on the HDMI port (but that may be unrelated), but most importantly, if I use the serial connection to the board (so I can see the boot messages), it seems to load some kind of limited kernel in a ramfs ... I don't know where this comes from really ... I don't even have to log in and only a limited set of linux commands is available ...

I suppose I should modify/regenerate stuff in /boot/boot.cmd (or .scr) but I'm not sure where to begin ...

Could you please help ? Thanks !

Here are the boot messages if it helps ...
