hantomqtt's Introduction

ESP8266 / ESP32 to MQTT

This project is based of https://github.com/roarfred/AmsToMqttBridge HanReader code.

I wanted to have dynamic parsing of the messages, as well as applying the unit and scaler to go from: 2404, Scaler: 0.1 -> 240.4V before sending message on mqtt. I also get the current time from a NTP-server so all list updates have the time unix epoch.

On the subscription end of MQTT you can use list_updated as a syncronization point and update the topics that have a matching timestamp. The units is stored in a persistent topic and you will get them on subscription/connection.

I'm currently hard coding the secrets (ssid/psk/server adresses/...) in a file secret.h, I've included an example of this file.

The raw M-Bus data is also sent over MQTT on a "raw/powermeterhan" topic.

PS

I have a AIDON meter from Hafslund, and while I don't think there should be large changes required to the code, if any, to support Kaifa or Kamstrup, these models are not tested and may not work correctly.

Compiling

Should compile fine with the Arduino IDE using either ESP8266 or ESP32 board.

Third party libraries used in this code is:

Storage / Memory usage-wise:

Sketch uses 795458 bytes (60%) of program storage space. Maximum is 1310720 bytes.
Global variables use 43556 bytes (13%) of dynamic memory, leaving 284124 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 327680 bytes.

Connections

We only need to receive data from the HAN M-Bus TTL Adapter, and to be nice, feed the adapter power. This means that we need to connect three pins from the ESP32/ESP8266 and the M-Bus TTL Adapter.

ESP32

  • PWR 3v3
  • GND
  • GPIO16 (RX2|U2_RXD)

With the ESP32 WROOM32 DevKit the pinout looks like this: image

ESP8266

  • PWR 3v3
  • GND
  • GPIO13 (RX2)

We use serial-swap on the ESP8266, that's why we don't connect up to the default RX-pin (GPIO02) For those of you with a NodeMCU v3 the following pinout shows where RX2 are - D7. Ref: image

The HAN M-Bus TTL adapter can be labeled in a way that either RX or TX means data out from the adapter to the ESP, so you may need to test both, depending on the adapter. Some pictures below are from me testing with a NodeMCU v3 and a ESP32 DevKit v1. You'll always want to use the RX-pin on the ESP.

!!! Known Issues !!!

Instability [Status: Mitigated]

There is an instability-issue where the system either loses connection or does not receive new HAN-data after a weeks time or so. Does not look to be an OOM issue. Currently there's code in now that triggers a watchdog if no new HAN-message is received in 60 seconds, and restarts the device. I'm gathering more log samples to track down this issue.

MQTT Messages

Static information is stored as persistent messages. I.e. units.

Static information (sent on subscription)
