[RePost] Shpock.com

WTF1 commented Apr 10, 2017

You'll need to email support to clear your account, and they'll make it hard for you to run open deals and ask your business partner to rate your deal so they can see it's all right. They want the same from you, if you have made deals outside of Shpock (you can put a deal "sold to other users"), and the know exactly that this buyer can not evaluate. So you have a long mail traffic, until you finally leave out. Saved data will be preserved, at least as long as you have the app still on the phone (guess !!)

Repo Stargazers

If you have been tagged in this post, it is because you have starred the original JustDeleteMe repo.
The original repo is now defunct and no longer maintained so we the jdm-contrib group have forked it.
We intend to maintain and continue to improve the site for the foreseeable future.
So this why you have been tagged. We ask that you put your support behind us like you did the original so that this app can continue to help and support society at large.

An easy way to show your support is to star our repository, submit a pull request, and/or bring an issue to our attention. Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Revive justdelete.me

As discussed on this issue on the original repository, JDM has been abandoned and wasn't being properly kept. A bunch of us want to keep it alive, so the goal is to slowly migrate people to access it here.

I've updated the website to remove all the phishy information and added some CI tools to keep it healthy, you're welcome to contribute :)

Detach repo

Can you please detach this repo from the not maintained fork?

You can this either do it manually or (which I recommend) just contact the GitHub support to do it for you.

This…

  1. shows that this is a real maintained project and not just a repo of someone who (once) made a pull request
  2. linking to the original repo on every page does not make sense anymore as it has been discontinued/is not maintained anymore and you…
  3. can (and IMHO should) still link to the original repo/website/author/… for crediting them, but you can do so in better ways (in the Readme, wiki or so)
  4. allows searching in this repo on GitHub and
  5. it just looks much nicer

Add editorconfig

If you add an editorconfig file you can easily make sure contributors choose the right indentation and similar things. They can choose from a variety of editor plugins and it is even supported by GitHub by default.

Change "Paypal" classification

It should be "impossible to delete", because Paypal keep your information even you close your account.

Step to confirm:

  1. Close your account. (several years ago & recently, 2 samples)
  2. Create new account and try to add a credit card to it.
  3. You can't do it because Paypal won't let you add same card number on different account[1]
  4. Contact support by phone. They will tell you about your previous account information, such as email address and full credit card details.

They are NOT deleting anything.

last.fm should have "difficulty: impossible"

Quoting from the last.fm account settings page linked to from your site:

Close account

This will deactivate your Last.fm user account, so your user page will no longer be shown on the site.

I just checked and you can indeed reactivate the account at a later time, with all user data intact.

[Repost] easyjet.com

reclaimer commented Apr 24, 2016

Hey,

I noticed easyJet doesn't want to part away with your data. It's also impossible to change some of the data, so the account just stays there.

If someone can confirm this as well, perhaps we can list easyJet as impossible to delete.
ChristoCoder commented May 27, 2016

I'm gonna test it out myself, will report on what happens
aeuae commented Nov 3, 2016

searching the web leave me with the feeling that it must be impossible to do, unless somebody has a report of doing it via contacting support. any updates on that @ChristoCoder ?

WTF?!

This is just a polite "fuck off" for @PyroSamurai.

You decided to try to take over the original justdelete.me project because you thought it was no longer maintained. Fair enough.

But you (or maybe @tupaschoal) decided to create a new repository from scratch and copy the code, instead of forking the old one on Github, and you don't point to the old repository anywhere. This might start to rub the line between "fair enough" and "disrespectful".

But @PyroSamurai, you opened up an issue (#86) and decided to spam everyone you saw in the other repository - hundreds of people. Why? You said, and I quote, "It was the most efficient way." The most efficient way of doing what? Spamming people?

Even worse, when people complained about what you did, you deleted their comments and finally closed the thread to prevent further complaints. This goes way beyond disrespectful.

It's stupid enough to spam people in a desperate attempt to grab people's attention to your project. You're a kid and feel empowered that you're trying to take over a big project that has lots of visibility. No problem. You're young and probably don't understand how these things should work yet, I can understand that - but don't be an attention whore and don't pester people with a childish attitude like this. You're only accomplishing the exact opposite of what you intended. As in, people suggesting everyone affected reports you for abuse, or that everyone affected opens a new issue here complaining about what you did.

Add Conte.it to site.json

sites.zip

Hello to all,
I wonder if the Justdeleteme database can be upgraded.
I've updated sites.json file, attached to .zip, adding Conte.it (http://conte.it/).
I have completed all fields of interest by entering the proper notes.

Below the upgraded code in the .json file:

{ "name": "Conte.it", "url": "http://www.conte.it/privacy-unsubscribe/", "difficulty": "easy", "notes": "Fill out the form to request cancellation from Conte.it's insurance services.", "notes_it": "Compila il form per richiedere la cancellazione dai servizi assicurativi di Conte.it", "domains": [ "conte.it" ] },

Waiting for your answer I hope

Mass Tagging Public Apology

We're sorry if you have been mass tagged and spammed on issue #86. As enthusiasts of the project, we wanted to let everyone know it is still alive, but we made a bad decision. Hope you understand and get the apologies, we have no excuses.
Sorry!

Inconsistency of difficulty levels

I've noticed that the difficulty levels can be inconsistent sometimes, especially the medium level which could use a more clear definition. For example MailChimp and a few others are listed as medium while easy would be a much more accurate description of them as they allows you to fully delete your account from your settings, while some of them require contacting support through the website, can only be deleted in an app, require you to verify your identity in an automated email with a link in it, some of them keep user data or contributions after deletion. We should consider clarifying the definition of the medium difficulty, especially in regards to when you have to contact support through a website which would be a much better match for the hard difficulty, and when a website allows account to be reactivated within a certain time period (usually 30 days).

Can we consider clarifying this difficulty level and potentially reclassifying quite a few things in it?

No Longer impossible, should be changed to 'Hard'. Your account can be deleted by contacting, although some pertinent information may remain, link is still relevant.

To delete your account:
If you want to permanently close and delete your account, contact us.

When you delete your account:

  • We will verify your identity for security purposes before accepting the deletion request.

  • You can’t reactivate, recover any data, or regain access to your account once it’s deleted.

  • Any reservations you currently have as a host or a guest will automatically be canceled.

  • We’ll start working on your deletion request after we receive it, but some of your data may remain in our systems if we are legally required, or while we are legally permitted, to retain it.

[Suggestion] Pull sites.json at runtime with Javascript

A suggestion to reduce the technology stack here: rather than pre-compiling the HTML with any sites.json or template changes, reduce the page to one file and pull & parse sites.json on site load.

Advantages:

  • No need to do gulp build for new changes to reflect
    • Reduces number of commits needed for a single change
  • Reduces initial page load time

Disadvantages:

  • Splits page load into multiple requests; can't necessarily be combined, since this would be an async XHR
  • Overall page load time remains roughly equivalent, but site may not be fully usable between initial HTML load and sites.json load. (this can be sidestepped with loading indicators or accounted for in post-XHR processing)

I'm fully open to thoughts and suggestions to this end; I haven't spent any time toward implementing this change, so I'm not too attached to any specific details here.

There is no delete me button on webpage. You have to send an email to support and wait their reply. Plus, they ask you to wait at least 10 days to process. Sometimes they ignore or forget your request and you have to request again.

Fix NPM warnings wherever possible

We should be able to ideally fix a number of these warnings (use something besides swig as it is no longer maintained, replace gulp-util?, add repository/license fields, etc.)

Firefox extension

If the Chrome extension is a WebExtension you should quite easily be able to port it to Firefox.
Also the source code of the extension should be in the jdm-contrib organisation.

Update browser extension (READMEs)

justdeleteme/justdelete.me#731 (comment)
#181

Hi,

Hope you're well

Thanks for software

Do we have access to the browser extension pages?:

If yes, can we get the READMEs (inc. links) updated to point to http://justdeleteme.xyz and/or http://github.com/jdm-contrib

If no, can we create new extension pages

Currently, both Chrome and Firefox pages are all over the shop with regards to attribution and it's very confusing, especially with the project migration

Let me know if you have any issues - happy to help

Hope to hear back

Keep up great work

Yours faithfully

Search bar issues

Borrowing this from the source repo's issue list:

Every time I type a character in the main search box, the URL fragment identifier (the part after the #) is updated to match the contents of the box. It happens even if I type very quickly. I find it pretty annoying, since it creates tons of history entries and makes the "back" button useless. It also causes missed keys when I type too quickly. It would be nice if the URL were only updated once the user stops typing.

In case it's relevant, I tested this with Firefox 43.0 on Ubuntu 14.04.

EDIT: (collapsing comments into one checklist)

So actually there's a bunch of search bar issues...

  • Each keyup event triggers a hash change where it need not do that
  • If you trigger a page update from the full list of sites (eg. from a blank search bar type one letter), it's possible to lose some inputs while the page updates to remove all non-applicable sites. (type "Uber" really fast and you'll end up with something like "Uer" or "Ub" in the search bar)
(mostly a non-issue after the hash update timer implementation)
  • Hash/filter don't update when cutting or pasting via right-click
  • Spaces become %20 after hash update

Add HTTPS support

Currently, the website is not available using HTTPS.

You should use something like Let's Encrypt to get an SSL certificate and allow encrypted view of the website.
All the major navigators are going to be blocking non-HTTPS traffic in the near future (https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2015/04/30/deprecating-non-secure-http/ for example) so it makes sense to support this ASAP.

The main issue I can see is that Github Pages doesn't seem to offer certificate support for custom domains.
Sites hosted on *.github.io require it, but custom domains don't seem to be supported.

New branding

May I say, I'm glad this lives on. Such a shame somebody bought the project and has just left it to wilt. With that in mind, it'd be great to get this rebranded and going again. For that you need a domain. I'd like to suggest: pleasedelete.me If you like it, buy it quick before someone holds it to ransom over you.

[Discussion] Remove "domain" property?

As-is, while we do have repositories for the Chrome and Firefox, we do not actively maintain them. Neither seems to have an active userbase (15603 users of the Chrome extension, and 27 users of the Firefox addon, based on the respective sites' stats) and neither have active comments/feedback, leading me to believe that they would not be missed if they were removed.

This would help remove a fair number of extra "domain" property entries in sites.json that would no longer be needed.

Twitter tracking

The twitter share button brings in tracking from Twitter.

<a href="https://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-url="http://justdeletme.xyz">Tweet</a>
<script>!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=/^http:/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+'://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');</script>
