Building

JavaScript is bundled with browserify. Before building, install dependencies:

npm install -g browserify
npm install

After making changes in assets/js/main.js, be sure to run:

npm run build

Development

A few more scripts are available to help with development, but you'll need to install some things first:

npm install -g serve
npm install -g watchify

Then run the following to serve the site locally and automatically run browserify when changes are made:

npm run dev

Here are some awesome places put together by @incanus. Be great to have comments included.

Breakfast

  • Zell's - nice variety, can hang outside with coffee if there's a wait
  • Screen Door - only weekends, expect a tremendous line, but excellent soul food
  • Genie's - if you like bloody marys / infused vodka
  • Junior's - super vegan friendly
  • Pine State Biscuits - southern style biscuits/gravy/etc.
  • Sanborn's - German pancakes
  • Industrial Cafe - nice salmon dishes, cool part of upper NW
  • Broder - Danish inspired, small with wait but worth it
  • Besaw's - classic NW Portland brunch spot
  • Tin Shed - nice view of classic North Portland

Lunch/dinner/pub

  • Deschutes - in the Pearl, classic large NW brew pub
  • Podnah's Pit - best BBQ
  • Apizza Scholl's - simple but excellent pizza, cool part of Hawthorne / Mt. Tabor
  • Pok Pok - also Sen Yai Noodle's is by them and nearby
  • Nostrana - Italian, not too fancy, great atmosphere
  • Tabla - bit nicer, great menu
  • White Owl Social Club - great back patio, my favorite burger
  • Teote Areperia - great menu, cheap, another great back patio
  • Farm Cafe - always local farm ingredients, nice dinner out
  • Pambiche - excellent Cuban
  • Olympic Provisions - charcuterie
  • Dick's Kitchen - paleo diner
  • Laughing Planet - nice cheap delicious burritos etc.

Coffee

  • Ristretto Roasters
  • Stumptown
  • Coava
  • Water Ave.
  • Blue Kangaroo

Food carts

  • Nong's Khao Man Gai - Thai street food chicken & rice
  • Whole Bowl - Mexican-inspired delicious bowl
  • PDX Steak Frites - great sauces too
  • Wolf & Bear - falafel
  • Burrasca - handmade Italian
  • Pyro Pizza - wood-fired in a cart!

Beer

  • Bridgeport - great food + one of the original three Oregon brewers
  • Cascade Barrel House - sour beers, unique
  • Rogue - great beer, food not as great
  • Green Dragon - 50 taps, great patio
  • Basecamp - great decor, side yard, and S'more Stout
  • Burnside Brewing - great food too
  • Horse Brass - English-style pub, an institution, lots of taps
  • Apex - great outdoor beer garden
  • Prost - German food & beer (i.e. large) and nice patio, North Portland

Wine

Wineries are more out of the city, lots of great ones, don't know of too many places in town though.

Dessert

  • Blue Star Donuts - brioche style with espresso bar
  • Lauretta Jean's - great pie spot
  • Whiffies (cart) - deep fried pocket pies
  • Waffle Window - Belgian waffles with fruit
  • Pix - French desserts, Spanish tapas & sherry
  • Salt & Straw - ice cream
  • Cacao - fine chocolate

Outdoor

  • Wildwood Trail up to Pittock Mansion
  • Mt. Tabor reservoirs & park
  • Anything in the Columbia River Gorge (Multnomah Falls, Horsetail Falls, Angel's Rest) - need a car though
  • Esplanade loop - urban hike on the river, can loop Steel & Hawthorne Bridges for about 3mi
  • Sauvie Island biking & hiking - again, car, Warrior Rock Lighthouse hike is fun, Smith & Bybee Lakes

Sights

  • Zoo - great NW section
  • Rose Garden
  • OMSI - science museum, kid-focused but also sub tour, IMAX, planetarium, etc.
  • Powell's Books - world famous, largest independent book dealer
  • NW 21st/23rd north of Burnside - fancy shopping
  • Tom McCall Riverfront Park - people watching etc.
  • PSU Farmer's Market - largest in town
  • Saturday Market - runs Sunday also
  • Kennedy School soaking pool - local hotel chain that refurbs historic buildings, this is a nice cheap hot pool within
  • Forestry Museum - pretty uniquely NW
