jost's Issues

Font Not Visible in PDF

Having trouble with Jost and PDFs. Anytime a file containing Jost is exported, the font does not show up on any computer that does not have it locally installed.

No style links

winword_2019-01-30_14-51-24
Rather than seeing the fonts like this on the font menu, I would like to only see the roman versions, and to see the italics only when selecting the “italic” style option. This worked in an older version:
winword_2019-01-30_14-53-01
As you can see, the Bold is also proprely style linked here, and thus not on the list – I may access it by selecting the Regular and using the bold style.

Macron on vowel increases character size.

Hi there,
Love the font, but I have a concern. From time to time I need to write text that includes Maōri words. When I add a macron (the line over the ō), to Renner*, the character size increases for that letter, and kerning looks wrong. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

Alternate version of "ae" is missing

The font includes the single story 'a' glyph as an alternative, wich I really like. Unfortunately the alternative version for 'ae' (and probably others related to the "a" glyph) are missing,

Weird printing issues when using Jost in Word

I love this font and want to use it in every document I make.
Sadly it seems to not be optimised for use in Microsoft Office, as I try to use only the 300 font which I than turn Bold when needed (like any other font).
The printer gives me a skeleton of the font itself (while still looking fine on screen)

Is there a way to have a font file for offline work, where it just works like Arial or NTR ?

I am really uneducated with everything regarding fonts, so please forgive this probably dumb question if I didn't catch something or got the wrong version.

Thanks for this great work.

lower case 'a' stylistic sets not consistent

Using InDesign, I set up a 'waterfall' of text with the different weights which all showed the double story lowercase 'a'.

When I selected all and changed the Opentype Stylistic Set to Set 1, only the Bold, Heavy and Black weights changed to the single story lowercase 'a'.

When I looked at the glyphs grid, the double story and single story lowercase 'a ' were in different positions in the grid for Hairline through to Semi weights and showed (Null) for character metadata whereas Bold, Heavy and Black displayed metadata for the single story 'a' characters.

I hope that makes sense.

Slant is not optically compensated

Currently the slant axis is just the result of a brute transformation process.

It should be re-mastered with the result of an "optical compensation" process, or ideally, drawn by hand with such compensations in mind.

There are scripts around that will slant while doing optical compensation - one is buried in https://github.com/google/roboto/tree/master/scripts/lib/fontbuild , one is built into GlyphsApp (https://glyphsapp.com/tutorials/easy-oblique), I think there are more around on github made for RoboFont... :)

[feature request] Rouble Symbol

I will be very appreciate if you add symbol for Russian currency — ₽.
U+20BD ₽ RUBLE SIGN symbol for Unicode version 7, (HTML ₽)

Thank you in advance! :-)

[feature request] Support for Lithuanian language

Thank you so much for this amazing font! It has so many characters and I can use it with Lithuanian language. Almost... There is only one character missing: ų. Is it possible to add it?
Thank you a lot!

[enhancement] Kerning issue with cyrillic 'д' letter

Hello!

Thank you for you work first of all! Latin version is just amazing.

Cyrillic version is also mostly fine. But there is trouble with kerning for cyrrilic 'д' letter. It is too much wide. Could you fix it please? If you need help with cyrillic alphabet I could try to.

Thank you in advance!

Jost Kerning Issue

[Feature Request] Add Variable Widths

If you added a width option (ie. condensed/extended), this variable font would be killer. For 10 bucks, I'd buy it myself and add it to one of our Futura-based websites.

An X-height control would be really nice too.

Font names in TTF/OTF Files

There is some mixup with the font names in the TTF/OTF files:

  • Renner Thin is just called Renner (italic is okay)
  • Renner Book is just called Renner* (italic also wrong)
  • Renner Semi is just called Renner* (italic also wrong)
  • Renner Bold is just called Renner* (italic also wrong)

This makes it impossible to use the fonts correctly in software that is not using specific font handling, like MS Word.

For additional usability it would be great to include the numbering in the font names, so sorting would be correct.

Website says version 3.4, but it's 3.5

Last paragraph of https://indestructibletype.com/Jost.html

ALWAYS IMPROVING
Jost* is now at version 3.4, meaning this font has been worked and reworked since its inception. Many of the changes and improvements have come directly from the community. If there are ways that you think Jost* can be improved, reach out and maybe Jost* 3.5 will include that feature or fix.

Should be 3.5, 3.6.

[feature request] Support for Slovak language?

Hello there, first of all Jost is awesome type! And I have another feature request. Please do not forget about Slovak language :)

Try words as: Topoľčany, kôň, šteká, žriebä, vôkol, čaša, dopĺňanie mäkčeňov a dĺžňov, tŕň, vôkol tŕnia kráčalo tridsať koní, ílovitá pôda, bábätko.

Much love.

Add these glyphs

S and s with cedilla (for Turkish), IJ and ij glyphs (for Dutch) and ʼn (for Afrikaans).

Fontmake will create an empty ttf folder

Hi,

once I run fontmake -o variable -m jost.designspace it creates an empty folder called variable_ttf in the directory. Am I missing something? I already purchased the font but I want to make some adjustments to it.
Changing letters in glyphs.app will create an unusable variable font ttf file. I guess the variable font export function is still in its beta.

Document alternate character sets

First of all, thank you for this amazing font!

The Web site mentions that Jost supports alternate characters (e.g. single-story 'a', tabular numbers, etc.). It would be great if these options were documented in the README.md file with specific details about how to enable them in CSS, etc.

[feature request] Support for Polish language?

This is a beautiful typeface, thank you so much Owen for creating it and making it available for free. I am wondering if there is any chance of having Polish characters in the future?

Trémas are fatter than dots on i in bold and heavy

The tremas on the bold and heavy variants of e.g. ö, ä and ï are larger than the dots on the i. In my opinion, that makes those characters unnecessarily optically heavy. I noticed in other fonts, tremás are sometimes even smaller than the dot on the i.

Capital Sharp S: ẞ

I noticed that Jost* does not feature a proper capital sharp s (ẞ, just like Segoe UI on GitHub). A good entry point for designing the capital sharp s can be found on typography.guru.

Colon placement for times

A nice feature of Apple's San Francisco is how the colon adjusts its placement in time notation:

4:s
4:35

It would be nice for Jost to do the same thing.

Renner.css, some fonts not found

Seems like Renner light in the CSS couldn't be found.

It's:

https://indestructibletype-fonthosting.github.io/fonts/renner_300_light-webfont.woff2
https://indestructibletype-fonthosting.github.io/fonts/renner_300_light-webfont.woff

Could be (following other URLs):

https://indestructibletype-fonthosting.github.io/renner_300_light-webfont.woff

Polish glyphs lack 2 signs

The latin extended version lacks 2 glyphs: ź and ż. It's a great font, but unfortunatelly because of that I cannot use it in my projects :(

right sidebearing appears to be off with right and left single quotes

On both my website and in pdfs I create of my documents, whenever I have a right single quote being used as an apostrophe (eg: "John's"), it looks like there's a bigger gap between the quote and the "s" that follows (or any other letter that follows). Following is a screenshot of a document with the word "let's" with the extra spacing after the apostrophe.

[Feature Request] Font Variation : Make uppercase AMNW letters tips fit in line

I really love the style of your font. It is looks very clean.
However, one small thing doesn't look how I wished it were -> the uppercase AM:

Badly edited:
tse

If you could create a variation or toggleable feature which make sharp glyphs tips fit into the line I would be really grateful. (Including NW, while not used, they are also over the top line).

How can I use alt a in my software

Hello, I am developing an application and would like to use your font for the UI texts.

The application needs to use the a.alt character instead of the normal a.
I tried to open Book.sfd file in FontForge and see the Glyph Info of this char. The problem is that the unicode value is -1.
image

Could you please tell me how to use this kind of char in my application? I am just a developer, not a font designer and have no idea how to work with a font.

Use of italic axis instead of the slant axis

Why do you use the italic axis and not the slant axis, since the letter shapes aren’t true italics? Some variable fonts on v-fonts.com use the italic (Meta for example, but there it’s a true italic and there is no gradation between italic and upright) others the slant axis (like Output Sans). Does this have any technical reasons? If not I find it a bit confusing since it seems to be slanted and not a true italic.

Bad rendering on Windows - using @font-face webfont

I do all of my work on a Mac, but have a windows laptop to check how sites behave/look there.

I am used to differencies between platforms when it comes to font rendering, etc. But today something really weird caught my eye.

Completely random(tested on two windows 10 machines), really weird rendering of Jost.

Clear the cache or refresh, now the ones that rendered ok are bad and vice versa. Like every even letter has top padding and odd ones bottom, leading to wavy distorted text.

As I said completely random, at first I thought that only the book weight is faulty, but soon realized it is random and all weights I am using are prone to this.

The text looks the same as in this stackoverflow thread

What is the reason? I am using just the woff and woff2 converted files, should I setup @font-face syntax differently with additional eot, svg, etc files?

Edit: I tested with hosted webfont version now, works flawlessly. Is there a way to load only the desired weights and not all ones?

Variable web font does not render well in Chrome

image
left: Chrome
Center: Edge
Right: Firefox

In each pair:
the top font is the static non-variable font.
The bottom font is the variable font.

For some reason, chrome does not display the variable font correctly/well.
I've tried to do all sorts of things to fix the inconsistent kerning on the chrome browser, but nothing seems to work.

Hairline Italic has Jost* 200 Hairline Italic in Style Group

The Hairline Italic file has Jost 200 Hairline Italic in Style Group.
This causes it to be displayed like that in the LibreOffice font list.
It should read Jost 100 Hairline Italic (100 not 200).

I see that all of the italic fonts have a separate style group.
The Regular and Italic of each weight should have the same style group.
Modern applications will not use these name fields, just older apps like LibreOffice.

Is it possible to use Jost as one font in word ?

I try to use this great font for my contracts (much easier to read for many people, they ask me about it all the time).
Sadly using it in word is a bit painful, as I can't simply use "bold / italic" without ruining the typeface.

Would it be possible to make the font behave like many others where Word only sees the "regular be it 300 or 400" one and applies the "bold" and "italic" nomenclature accordingly without having to switch the font each time ?

Or am I just missing something ?

web font

Can I use your font as a webfont hosted on my server if I use the fontsquirrel generator?
Thank you very much for your font and support!

On the other hand, some of these may flag actual bugs in the font such as glyphs mapped to an incorrect codepoint. Please consider reviewing the design and codepoint assignment of these to make sure they are correct.

The following glyphs do not have the recommended number of contours:

in the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or
binary files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user.

SIL OPEN FONT LICENSE Version 1.1 - 26 February 2007

PREAMBLE
The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide
development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation
efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and
open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership
with others.

The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and
redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The
fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded,
redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved
names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives,
however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The
requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply
to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives.

DEFINITIONS
"Font Software" refers to the set of files released by the Copyright
Holder(s) under this license and clearly marked as such. This may
include source files, build scripts and documentation.

"Reserved Font Name" refers to any names specified as such after the
copyright statement(s).

"Original Version" refers to the collection of Font Software components as
distributed by the Copyright Holder(s).

"Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting,
or substituting -- in part or in whole -- any of the components of the
Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a
new environment.

"Author" refers to any designer, engineer, programmer, technical
writer or other person who contributed to the Font Software.

PERMISSION & CONDITIONS
Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining
a copy of the Font Software, to use, study, copy, merge, embed, modify,
redistribute, and sell modified and unmodified copies of the Font
Software, subject to the following conditions:

  1. Neither the Font Software nor any of its individual components,
in Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself.

  2. Original or Modified Versions of the Font Software may be bundled,
redistributed and/or sold with any software, provided that each copy
contains the above copyright notice and this license. These can be
included either as stand-alone text files, human-readable headers or
in the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or
binary files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user.

  3. No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font
Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the corresponding
Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the primary font name as
    presented to the users.

  4. The name(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) or the Author(s) of the Font
Software shall not be used to promote, endorse or advertise any
Modified Version, except to acknowledge the contribution(s) of the
Copyright Holder(s) and the Author(s) or with their explicit written
    permission.

  5. The Font Software, modified or unmodified, in part or in whole,
must be distributed entirely under this license, and must not be
distributed under any other license. The requirement for fonts to
remain under this license does not apply to any document created
    using the Font Software.

TERMINATION
This license becomes null and void if any of the above conditions are
not met.

Add to Google Fonts API

I love this font. It is the only open source and free to use Paul Renner styled font I was able to find, and I fell in love with it. For this reason, I think it would be really great to have it added to Google Fonts API. I know that a CDN already exists, but the great thing about Google Fonts API is that it also allows to dynamically choose which styles, weights and unicode ranges to include into the CSS. It would also help the font to have the attention it deserves, because it is really well made. Having the font added to Google Fonts API is incredibly simple, you just have to make sure that the font follows these points and then open an issue on that same repo to have it added. What do you think?

Center and curvature of bold and heavy s

When comparing Renner* with Avenir Next, I noticed the center of the bold and heavy s look squeezed. The concave curves of the s also seem to have some tension; like the negative space are tiny balloons trying to squeeze the s into something thinner. The result is in my opinion a letter that looks less geometric than the rest of the bold and heavy fonts.

Otherwise, I love this typeface. Thank you.

Add `font-display: swap` to font-face blocks

Basically the title says it all. If each @font-face block in the Jost.css file would have the rule font-display: swap added, it would improve site accessibility and Lighthouse scores. I'd make a PR, but can't find the css file.

For reference sake, here's what I mean for a single @font-face:

@font-face {
  font-family: "Jost";
  src: url("Jost-100.ttf") format("truetype");
  font-weight: 100;
  font-style: normal;
  font-display: swap;
}

Thanks!
