fsspec have done great work on supporting all kinds of backends:

We should take advantage of that.

I think it's a good time to add some frontend code to enable the integration with imjoy. We can think of two way of integration:

• Load imjoy-core to elFinder, and support using ImJoy plugins to visualize and process files.
• Make elfinder an ImJoy plugin, so we can for example, get rid of this one https://github.com/imjoy-team/jupyter-engine-manager/blob/master/src/ImJoy-elFinder.imjoy.html

Jupyter has a standard content management API which will also been supported by Jupyter server. There are also ongoing work to support more backends with JupyterFS.

So it would be nice to support the content API directly. Either from the backend (in the form of a jupyter server extension) or build an frontend adapter for imjoy-elfinder by making an transport adapter (for elfinder connector api).

One issue I see is that, jupyter content api do not allow direct content serving (reported here).

Another limitation, at least for the classic notebook server, the content API is limited to access the notebook work directory for security considerations, we cannot access manage the entire volume or multiple volume (for windows) if the user doesn't start the server from root. However, I am not sure how jupyter server set its working directory. @Zsailer Could you perhaps comment on this?

After upgrading to the fastapi version, folder upload seems behave incorrectly. If we drag and drop a folder with many files in it, it only upload one file.

if the string representing the path to which the symbolic link points can't find in the _options["root"], the link will not found.

when you create a link named "/home/hpcadmin/jupyter" from "/home/jupyter" and the _options["root"] is /home/hpcadmin. if you want __tree the "/home/hpcadmin/jupyter". you can see the error.
