CoalaDraw

Reserved repository for Winter of Code 2.0 participants.

Description

  • Subtitle: A collaborative, real-time drawing and diagramming tool.
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Mentee/Student/Participant Intake: 1-3
  • Primary Mentor: [email protected]
  • Forum: WoC 2.0 Discussion - Ask all of your tech/non-tech doubts here
  • Sub-domains: Frontend, Backend, AI/ML
  • Platfroms: cross-platform - Can be web or non-web both - depending on student's proposals
  • Problem Statement: CoalaDraw is an open-source drawing and diagramming tool with easy real-time collaboration feature. It will be like Web Whiteboard and draw.io. While diagramming tools like draw.io is open-source and very powerful, they lack in collaboration and free-hand drawing. On the other hand, services like Web Whiteboard isn't open source and lacks few diagramming capabilities. Let's make our very own CoalaDraw to address these issues and add some wild features too.

Initially we will focus on adding good free-hand drawing capabilities and then we will focus on p2p/1:1 collaborative feature. After that, we will work in parallel about optimising our collaborative feature, making drawing tools better and adding diagramming capabilities.

AI/ML folks in the team (if any), will work on some exciting features as shape prediction, writing to text and even image to text/drawing/diagram.

Later, we can add texting/voice-chat feature in the app for smoother collaboration.

Note: These are all my train of thoughts. Feel free to think wild and come up with new features and I've surely missed.

FAQ

Do I need to complete all this in WoC 2.0?

Nope. You will complete as much as feasible.

I do not know all of the techs. Should I apply?

For sure. Nobody knows everything. If you can identify the lego-blocks and think clearly about the problems, learning a tech (at least in basic level) is just one video away.

I only know frontend. Should I apply?

Yup. Do apply.

I know all of backend, frontend and AI/ML. Should I apply?

Hey superman, why not!

Will you take multiple candidates?

For this project, we can take 3 people at max. It totally depends upon the quality of proposals and how versatile a candidate is.

Who will be my mentor?

Your primary mentor will be @unsuitable001. But, our GDSC's tech team and other team leads will be there to mentor you too as per need and expertise. Feel free to ask help from anyone.
