Bash can understand many variable names, even ones that contain underscores. Thus, it is very common to see code like echo "$VAR is good", since it is much more readable and used in many other languages as well. The main exception on this rule is make(1), which parses only single-letter variables, and thus, the use ${VAR} is necessary there.
