Hi,
Yes, that binary is out of date. Sorry that I led you down that rabbit hole. Unfortunately, this happens every time the TMB
or Matrix
(a dependency of TMB
) package is updated out of sync with the other - something that is beyond my control. I could update the aniMotum
binary every time this happens but that's difficult to maintain. For this and many other reasons, it's usually best to install from source, although I know this is not without its own frustrations.
I will try to remove the old binaries to avoid this happening for others.
Thanks,
Ian

OK, thanks. BTW I am hoping to use aniMotum
for light-based geolocation, but you specifically warn about the problem of non-Gaussian errors. Do you know of any examples where someone uses aniMotum
for use with light-based geolocation? I'd be grateful for tips on dealing with the non-Gaussian errors.

The package (or an early version of it) has been used to filter processed geolocation data from seabirds, but I don't have any particular articles at hand other than this. The non-Gaussian location errors tend to occur in data collected from fish that spend considerable time at depth. In these cases, standard errors often do not adequately characterize location uncertainty because the 2D likelihood surfaces have shapes that are wildly different from any standard parametric distribution. So subsequent modelling with an SSM that uses location standard errors to inform measurement error would yield (highly) biased location estimates, at best.
