Call for designers

๐Ÿ‘‹ We're looking for designers who would be interested in cleaning up the design of the site. Please comment below if you're interesting in helping out!

Rethink the list of contributions UI

The current UI is very much a proof of concept and it could be much better. @hiimbex wanted to tackle how to represent contributions better. The contribution UI could be leveraged better to dispel some misconceptions. Ex: Some might be intimated and think that fixes a typo in the docs doesn't "count" as a contribution. However, by showing line number changes, we can show through example that contributions can be small yet still valuable.

Dump of the notes I took during our discussion:

  • Show the commit message
  • Show when the commit took place
  • Make it look GitHubby
  • Make the avatar prominent

Call for photographers

๐Ÿ‘‹ As part of featuring the stories of first time contributors, we want to highlight their physical appearance because we believe everyone should be able to put a face to a story. In doing so, we hope to demonstrate that people are all unique yet no matter what a person looks like, their contribution and story is valuable.

If you would be willing to help us, please comment with your current city so that we can match you with people whose stories will be featured.

Call for maintainers

๐Ÿ‘‹ If you maintain an open source project, we would like to hear from you. We have a few questions that would help guide our direction:

  • What do individuals need to know or do to successfully contribute?
  • What characteristics make for a successful contributor?
  • Is there anything you wish you could tell first timers before they submit that first PR?

Limit results to show people only once per API request

We don't have a good way of dealing the multiple contributions over multiple projects in rapid succession so a simple server-side check should allow us to prevent 9 hiimbex images from showing up :P (We also encountered this issue b/c of testing welcome)

Call for stories

๐Ÿ‘‹ Do you have a story to tell? We're looking to highlight stories from individuals who have successfully contributed to open source. Especially if you are from an under represented background or have struggled to find a voice in the community we want to highlight your voice as a way to empower others to make the jump and become contributors.

For an awesome example of what we're looking for read Bex's medium article --> Gaining my voice in open source

Please leave a comment below if you would like to be highlighted or fill out this form.

Call for opinions

๐Ÿ‘‹ In short, are we going about this problem correctly? What did we overlook in our analysis? How can we better accomplish our goal of empowering everyone to be a contributor?

Setup the stories/blog feature

One of the ways we want to encourage new comers to become a part of open source is to share specific stories that might resonate on a deeper level. @hiimbex's Gaining my voice in open source was what inspired us to create this website to help people feel welcome in the open source community.

A couple quotes stood out to me:

"...[other contriubtors] were all men, or at least, they sure as hell didnโ€™t look like me."

I was so scared that someone would see my face and my lack of contribution history, and they would just know.

The first solution to this problem is to show new open source contributors and their contributions. When you browse the front page, you see plenty of stock GitHub Avatars and profiles with one or two public repos. Seeing others with similar experience or history on GitHub might help people feel like they do in fact belong.

The other side of this approach is to call out certain stories of note, like Bex's that capture a very personal journey in open source. That's what I want a stories section to be--I want to invite contributors new and old that represent all cultural, sexual, gender and ethnic identities to share how they first got started because I think we all have gone through self-doubt and anxiety about contributing.
