Sometimes one may want to modify the output, so an option to just output the DOT code to stdout, instead of rendering the graph, would be nice.

Any inputs on what could be expected of this plugin/backend is welcome.

Bigger workflows are hard for graphviz to visualize, due to many nodes an edges.
I find that my workflow tends to grow a lot when i'm preprocessing data files and for example are running the "same" three targets on maybe 100-200 files.
When visualizing the dependency graph for documentation, it's not necessary to show all the nodes and edges if they are similar and in parallel. It would be nice if these parallel paths in the graph could be drawn in a compact way.
The image shows how a compact visualization could look.

This will become easier when gwf 2.0 comes out with more detailed status metadata, but right now you can still color by status by asking the Scheduler what the status of a target is.
