3. click Done
4. Control-W

Expected

Workaround

5. quit the application.

The workaround is disruptive so instead, I chose to disable the extension.

Home-built Waterfox Classic 56.2.14 (20191007063316) on FreeBSD-CURRENT, with the dual-purpose (twinned) bookmarks button to the right of the address bar.

Numerous other extensions so this may be an extensions conflict. (Not forgetting my comment at https://www.reddit.com/comments/cxct6b/-/ezfnp49/, note to self: https://www.reddit.com/comments/93x02v/-/ to troubleshoot.)

would it be possible to make this usable again?
the Add Bookmark Here menu entry only appears at the top level of the bookmark bar, but not in folders.
