cs244_ps3's Introduction

Preparation
===========
The simple way to prepare the environment for running the tests
is by running

# ./init.sh

from the Git repository root. The init.sh script installs the
prerequisites, initializes the necessary submodules and build
the patched TC tool.
Bellow you can find a more in-depth explanation of the
preparation steps.

Running
=======
The tests are executed by running

# ./run.sh

from the Git repository root.

Building modified version of iproute2
=====================================
Several prerequisites are required to build iproute2:
- Flex
- Yacc/Bison
- libdb-dev

To install the prerequisites run:
# sudo apt-get install flex bison libdb-dev

To clone the modified iproute2 sources run the following
in your git repository directory:

# git submodule init
# git submodule update

Go to iproute2 directory and run
# ./configure
# make

Diagnostics
===========
While pFabric is activated (the kernel module is loaded and the qdisc
is added) it is possible to retrieve some statistic by reading from
the files /proc/pfabric_stats_<dev> and /proc/pfabric_stats_csv_<dev>
where <dev> stands for the network interface to which the qdisc was added.
Currently the statistics are mutual for all devices so this is only a
preparation to enable individual statistics per network device for
more complex topologies involving multiple pFabric switches.

pFabric Switch Design
=====================
pFabric switch is designed as a loadable Linux kernel module
which implements a classless queuing discipline (qdisc).
The qdisc is used for packet scheduling according to flow priorities.
More information about packet scehduling and queuing disciplines in
Linux can be found here:
