For those who only have some experience with hardware, is this project do-able with off the shelf components? And if not, what would you advise?

This is great by the way. Do you have plans to build them as purchasable units?

I noticed on the idledisco functoin when it does this, the first LED is skipped, the rest of them blink away happily but the first one never starts or changes color. I noticed this when it hit the birthday function

I'm kind of trying to do something similar to what you did, though I'm dealing with a problem I don't really know how to solve... And I think you should have met it too.
I purchased a power supply to... power my lamp you know, though it's double insulated, so as long as I use my capacitive sensor while plugged to my computer, everything goes right, but as soon as I unplug the microcontroller from the computer, the common ground is lost, hence the capacitive sensor doesn't work (since my ground is not the same as the controller's one). Have you dealt with that and, if so, how?

It has been noticed that c = random(0,255); is not globally declared anywhere. You have it in multiple functions. I couldn't tell if this was intentional.
