If you attempt to use au grep -o key value on a gzipped file, the tool is happy to start digging around in the file looking for record separators and generally doing something useless. (Not sure if this happens for other grep/cat commands, etc.)

In general, it would be good for the tool to inspect the beginning of the file to verify that it looks like an au file, possibly check the version, and/or check to see if the file appears to be gzipped, and bail out with an appropriate message.
