When first loading, the initial node should be near the bottom center of the screen rather than in the upper left, so that it can be immediately made use of. Currently you need to pan it down there before doing anything meaningful.

I think I originally did this because it was easier to not figure out the total size of the screen and let the user do the initial placement.

It would be helpful to have a mechanism for hiding/collapsing nodes and their subtrees.

Perhaps past a certain depth? ecola has some ideas along these lines.

Initially entering nodes a series of nodes is much harder than it needs to be, it should be possible to parse a string, e.g. split by whitespace or read S-expressions.

It would also be interesting to toggle subtrees between a text display and the full tree view, to save some space.
