That is a very good idea. I will add it to my todo list. Wonder what the command should be.

I want this too.

This in conjunction with the ability to query for current motor positions would allow me to stop a program in progress to clear chips or something, and then resume after.

This would be great for the Lasersaur project as well. At the moment I have code that sort of works in the LasaurGrbl fork. It's hooked up to the 'M112' code. The only problem I have is that it does not get processed if it is delayed in the serial input buffer.

I have implemented an abort in my fork that works via an external button to circumvent the serial buffer and take effect immediately. After the abort all pending commands are ignored until an M30 is sent. To resume, the program would have to be resend from the appropriate line on.
Also, "?" queries the current position in mm, steps planned and steps really taken.

There seems to be a lot of run-time commands that could be useful: status queries, pause/reset, enable/disable block delete, variable speed... How about a special command, like the '$' for read/write system settings, but for run-time only, such as a character '%' followed by the desired command. Something like this would keep options open for future development.

For most run-time things, this should work fine, but, as stefanix said, the serial input buffer lag is a problem for certain real-time commands like pause/reset. I can see few potential solutions. External controls or buttons as jgeisler0303 did for these special cases. Create another pseudo-data port with other Arduino pins, independent of the serial port (not very elegant). Or, continuously scan for these special characters/commands in the serial buffer realtime as an interrupt function and execute them (probably hard to implement with everything else).

Closing issue. Abort is now available in grbl edge v0.8.
