mirror-branch-action's Introduction

mirror-branch action

A Github Action to mirror one branch to another within the same repository

For example, if you've renamed your master branch to main, but a lot of links out on the web hard-code the old name, you could mirror the main branch back to master so those links keep working.

To use this Action, create a file called .github/workflows/mirror.yml with the following contents:

on:
  push:
    branches:
      - 'SOURCE_BRANCH_NAME'

jobs:
  mirror_job:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
name: Mirror SOURCE_BRANCH_NAME branch to DESTINATION_BRANCH_NAME branch
    steps:
    - name: Mirror action step
      id: mirror
      uses: google/[email protected]
      with:
        github-token: ${{ secrets.GITHUB_TOKEN }}
        source: 'SOURCE_BRANCH_NAME'
        dest: 'DESTINATION_BRANCH_NAME'

With SOURCE_BRANCH_NAME and DESTINATION_BRANCH_NAME replaced as appropriate.

This is not an officially supported Google product.

mirror-branch-action's Issues

Deprecated action env

The GitHub Actions workflow gives the following deprecation warning while running the action:

Node.js 12 actions are deprecated. For more information see: github.blog/changelog/2022-09-22-github-actions-all-actions-will-begin-running-on-node16-instead-of-node12.

What permissions do the GitHub Actions need?

This GitHub Actions uses the GITHUB_TOKEN. Can you please tell me what permissions are used for this token? If the permissions are only used in certain conditions, e.g. when a certain input is specified, please share that info as well.

At https://github.com/step-security/secure-workflows we are building a knowledge-base (KB) of permissions needed by different GitHub Actions. When developers try to remediate ossf/Scorecards checks, they use the knowledge-base to secure their GitHub Workflows.

Here is an example of how we store KB for an Action:

name: "GH Release"
github-token:
  action-input:
    input: github_token
    is-default: true
  permissions:
    contents: write
    contents-reason: to create GitHub release #Reference: https://github.com/softprops/action-gh-release/blob/fe9a9bd3295828558c7a3c004f23f3bf77d155b2/README.md?plain=1#L70
