Invalid characters cause misleading permission error

Adam,

thanks for that report, it's very helpful. I think at least one other person
might be seeing this
new behavior on 10.5 as well.

If you'd like to donate, simply go to the CronniX homepage (from the Help menu)
and click on
"Donations" on the navigation bar on the left.

Cheers,
Sven

Aloha!

I'm trying to use Cronnix in Leopard - it looks like a great program, but it
isn't working with my
system. I receive the following error:

Insufficient privileges to write crontab.

WAIT

I just figured it out—!

The problem is not permissions. The problem is that I'm pasting in a command
with a return
character in it!! /Use
rs/z****/bin

Instead of /Users/z****/bin

OK so instead I actually have a minor bug report: if you paste in a command
with illegal
characters, like \r in it, you get the "Insufficient privileges..." message

Just thought you should know :-)

BTW, Cronnix appears to be a great program, can we make donations?

Editing of the Root-User (maybe any other user) Crontab not possible under Lion

At my company we use a cron'd shell script to backup our software's mysql
database. So far we customised the schedule the script runs by using CronniX
with great success and ease. As the shell script needs root level privileges we
enter the schedule in the root-user's crontab. During our Lion-Testing we
encountered an issue that apparently makes it impossible to edit the root
crontab, or maybe any other user's crontab. Seemingly an included binary called
'sucrontab' is only available in a PowerPC version, which is rendered useless
under Lion, since there is no more support for PowerPC-Code.

Is there maybe a Intel version of this binary, or maybe another solution?

See attached screenshots for further info.

Regards,
Steve

Importing into system crontab overwrites user crontab

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open system crontab
2. Import a crontab (in system crontab format, i.e. w/ user field)
3. Save

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
The entries should go to /etc/crontab but instead they end up (overwriting!) in
the user's crontab.

cronnix not running on schedule

I have a simple crontab that runs:

osascript "/path/script.scpt"

In Cronnix I can 'run' this entry and it works perfectly

For some reason it won't execute at the scheduled time.

When I check crontab -l I can see that the schedule is correct.

Any help appreciated!

Status Window does not close when output redirected

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Create crontab entry in Cronnix using > or >> to redirect standard output.
(e.g. 0 7 * * * /scripts/test.sh >> /log/testlog
2. Click on Task --> Run
3. Status window opens and displays the following:

Running command
/scripts/test.sh >> /log/testlog
The output will appear below when the command has finished executing

4. The output is not displayed because it has been redirected and the status
window never closes until the user closes the window manually, which can be
difficult unless the user does a ps -A |grep test.sh to determine if the
process is done running.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I can take a guess at two things that cronnix could do in this case:
1. perform a ps-A |grep for the shell script and close the window when the
process no longer is found.
2. Cat the redirected output to the display window and then close the window
once the process is complete.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

System crontab drag & drop issue

In my scenario, several other lines in the crontab no longer worked (these were
every minute test
entries to the console like "happy new year"). So I had to delete them
completely and add them
again.

Hi James,

thanks for that report, I can reproduce that bug. However, in my case
it only shifted the "root" entry over to the command column in the
first line and didn't have any effects on the other lines in the
crontab. How was this different in your case?

Cheers,
Sven

Hello,

I think I found a bug in Cronnix.

When I drag a job from the bottom of the list to the top, the user
field (root) became embedded into the command (/bru/checkschedule).
This really messed up everything in the Crontab file and I had to
start completely from scratch by deleting all entries and entering
them again.

Issue #2
also when tried to open the user root

You can't open the application sucrontab because PowerPC applications are no
longer supported.
The system returned an empty crontab for 'root'. This probably just means that
there's no crontab for this user yet. Pressing OK will allow you to edit and
install a new crontab and you will never see this alert sheet again. If,
however, you are sure that 'root' does have a crontab, then you may have
encountered an temporal anomaly. Contact the author (see the About box) and
complain like there's no tomorrow.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. message 1 : a manual run of a cron entry after restarting cronix
2.
3. Message 2: Change user to root

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
No output

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
3.0.2 Lion 10.7.3

Please provide any additional information below.

Thunderbolt Bus:

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected to see root's crons.
Instead got a crash.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
3.0.2

Please provide any additional information below.
I'm using freeIPA for Single Sign On.

Original issue reported on code.google.com by [email protected] on 5 May 2014 at 1:44

Cronnix task (opening another app) not executing properly

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. AppleScript compiled as ".app" file, containing:

tell application "NZBVortex.app"
run
end tell

2. set the above script to run at any time using Cronnix

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
if i directly run the NZBVortex app or the above compiled AppleScript, it runs
with no problem. its licensed to my user account, and with the license has all
the advanced features enabled.

if i leave it to this Cronnix job, since the Lion upgrade, the app bouces in
the dock with a message that it isnt licensed. this means the app doesnt pick
up the queued items placed in a specific "watched" Finder folder.

looking at the app after its executed does run as my user account though...

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Cronnix 3.0.2
Lion 10.7 (as up-to-date as available from Software Update)

Please provide any additional information below.

Are there known issues with Cronnix on Lion? Or is it explainable in some other
manner?

Scheduling a mysql backup

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. I want to run that each day : "mysqldump --user=XXXXXXXX --password=XXXXXXX
-A > /PATH/TO/DUMPFILE.SQL"
2. In fact it creates an empty file
3. If i run that into the terminal it runs good

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I want to have a dump of my mysql databases

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
302 on MAC OS Lion server

Please provide any additional information below.

Thanks

Where are the data files stores

I tried doing a find but I couldn't find them. Where are the data files stored
that contain the user cron commands to execute? I sometime need to do remote
editing via ssh.

Stopped working

I have 10.6 and the latest cronnix. I setup some task that would send me an
email about every 15 minutes of every hour. It was working fine for about 3
days but now appears to have stopped. The tasks seem fine when I run them
manually with the run option. Not sure what the next debugging step would be.

I did noticed that from the terminal I got a message about new mail and when I
issued the "mail" command I had alot of email from crontab. Could the emails be
congesting things? Is there a way to configure cron/cronnix to stop sending me
the emails?

default text in command field

When you create a new record in the field for the team says:
echo "Happy New Year!"
This command does not work, because interpreter misinterprets the combination !"
$ echo "Happy New Year!"
-bash:! ": event not found

To solve this problem need to replace double quotes with single quotes.

if u not understand pls see image in attachment

Whenever I try and save a simple 2 line curl command I get

Insufficient privileges to write crontab.
If I log in as root user I CAN save
However, the script doesn't execute by itself!
Neither does the sample Happy New Year script
* * * * * echo "Happy New Year'

Rightclick 'Run Now' and both work fine...

This is my command
//CODE start
set FILENAME = `date +"%y%m%d-%H%M%S"`
curl -o webcam/$FILENAME.jpg http://www.foo.com/webcam.jpg
//CODE end
Can someone help?
