openknit's Introduction

OpenKnit is a project that offers a new digital fabrication tool, an open-source knitting machine that can create ready-to-wear clothes from digital files.

The documentation for the Wally340 is outdated, currently working on the development of the Wally120 since itÕs cheaper, smaller, easier to assemble and it works better. Although, the improvements of the Wally120 can be scaled up if you want to create bigger garments.

WARNING: this project is at an early stage of development, every piece of hardware and software is in beta version, testing and testing, if you are an adventurer this is a place for you.

openknit's Issues

needle

the size of the needle in the bill list is no longer to sell, which size of needle can be instead of ?

Is this project dead?

I'm very interested building a knitting machine by my own and searching for some open source projects which I can use as a starting point or to find a community.

As far as I've read this open source project was transformed into a company (knitterate.com) which sells knitting machines for ~ $15k. Ist this correct? That's no option for me just want to do this as a hobby.

Can someone lead me to active projects for (open source) knitting machines? Im spacially interested in knitting motif socks.

Transfer the T-slots linear bearings to OpenRail?

Hi G3rard, did you consider OpenRail for a linear bearing in the project? Looks like it is easily sourced, open hardware, and works well with standard aluminium extrusion 20x20.

In the OpenKnit project it would go easily with minimal changes, but to the bottom of needle beds. In this case a redesign would be necessary to the plexi cutouts, or maybe only to the 3d printed plastic pieces.

Anywho, I will - sure as hell - be building your design, once I get my head around a proper linear bearing.

Thank you for sharing!

Purpose of the encoder and changes to the code

Sorry if I am naive but is the encoder necessary? I would understand if you were using a DC motor that had no positional awareness but if you use a stepper library like PJRC's accelStepper you can keep track of the position of the steppers or even just use a step variable and then just use the normal Stepper library from Arduino. It seems like one less thing to worry about hardware wise and in the code.

The code as it is is sort of a mess, is there any plans to implement a protocol to control things from a computer input or SD card. Like a common control language such as g-code or using a preexisting protocol like firmata. as of now it just runs a preset clothing item which is fine but it seems like it would benefit from a set firmware and then have software clients that can tell it the type of items to knit.
