freeCodeCamp.org's open-source codebase and curriculum

freeCodeCamp.org is a friendly community where you can learn to code for free. It is run by a donor-supported 501(c)(3) charity to help millions of busy adults transition into tech. Our community has already helped more than 40,000 people get their first developer job.

Our full-stack web development and machine learning curriculum is completely free and self-paced. We have thousands of interactive coding challenges to help you expand your skills.

Table of Contents

Certifications

freeCodeCamp.org offers several free developer certifications. Each of these certifications involves building 5 required web app projects, along with hundreds of optional coding challenges to help you prepare for those projects. We estimate that each certification will take a beginner programmer around 300 hours to earn.

Each of these 50 projects in the freeCodeCamp.org curriculum has its own agile user stories and automated tests. These help you build up your project incrementally and ensure you've fulfilled all the user stories before you submit it.

You can pull in these test suites through freeCodeCamp's CDN. This means you can build these projects on websites like CodePen and Replit - or even on your local computer's development environment.

Once you've earned a certification, you will always have it. You will always be able to link to it from your LinkedIn or resume. And when your prospective employers or freelance clients click that link, they'll see a verified certification specific to you.

The one exception to this is if we discover violations of our Academic Honesty Policy. When we catch people unambiguously plagiarizing (submitting other people's code or projects as their own without citation), we do what all rigorous institutions of learning should do - we revoke their certifications and ban those people.

Here are our twelve core certifications:

Legacy Full Stack Development Certification

Once you have earned the Responsive Web Design, Algorithms and Data Structures, Front End Development Libraries, Data Visualization, Back End Development and APIs, and Legacy Information Security and Quality Assurance certifications, you'll be able to claim your freeCodeCamp.org Full Stack Development Certification. This distinction signifies that you've completed around 1,800 hours of coding with a wide range of web development tools.

Legacy Certifications

We also have 4 legacy certifications dating back to our 2015 curriculum, which are still available. All of the required projects for these legacy certifications will remain available on freeCodeCamp.org.

  • Legacy Front End Development Certification
  • Legacy Data Visualization Certification
  • Legacy Back End Development Certification
  • Legacy Information Security and Quality Assurance Certification

The Learning Platform

This code is running live at freeCodeCamp.org.

Our community also has:

  • A forum where you can usually get programming help or project feedback within hours.
  • A YouTube channel with free courses on Python, SQL, Android, and a wide variety of other technologies.
  • A technical publication with thousands of programming tutorials and articles about mathematics and computer science.
  • A Discord server where you can hang out and talk with developers and people who are learning to code.

Reporting Bugs and Issues

If you think you've found a bug, first read the how to report a bug article and follow its instructions.

If you're confident it's a new bug and have confirmed that someone else is facing the same issue, go ahead and create a new GitHub issue. Be sure to include as much information as possible so we can reproduce the bug.

Reporting Security Issues and Responsible Disclosure

We appreciate responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities that might impact the integrity of our platforms and users.

Contributing

The freeCodeCamp.org community is possible thanks to thousands of kind volunteers like you. We welcome all contributions to the community and are excited to welcome you aboard.

Map / Reduce Magnets

Imagine being able to move magnets around to build an algorithm. I think we can make this happen! We can create a set of magnets that covers some common JavaScript keywords, and allows for people to use arrays and objects, functions and loops.

  • Decide which items to make magnets for
  • Design the magnets
  • Determine cost viability (ideally, I'd like to be able to sell the set for $20 or so), and fit the entire set into a letter-sized envelope so we can use inexpensive international shipping

(maybe we could use images instead of variable names to keep things fun?)

Here are some keywords I think would be good to kick off the discussion:
var
for
while
() =>
i++
<, >, ===, !==
+, -, /, *, %
return
map
filter
reduce

We want to focus on only those that would be heavily used. Perhaps @evaristoc could do a token analysis of our algorithm challenge solutions?

City campsite assets

Here's a list of campsites with more than 1,000 members:

  • London
  • Delhi
  • Atlanta
  • Chicago
  • Seattle
  • Bengaluru
  • San Francisco
  • New York City
  • Toronto

My thinking is that we could create assets visually similar to our other stickers: white on green.

@Wes26 has already created one that in my (non-designer) opinion looks like a good start:

We could minimize the text by just saying "Free Code Camp" along the top, and then the city name on the bottom. The goal would be consistency and having a famous landmark (such as the Big Ben for London or the space needle for Seattle) as the illustration.

Request: Animated Fire Logo

I was going to do some videos and I was thinking that having a 2d animated version of the FCC campfire icon would be awesome. I'm thinking a 2-3 seconds of looping "flames" of the fire. It could be used as part of a title card for FCC related videos.

This image:

Both the inner and outer flame could be animated.

Updated landing assets

I love the icons @Rybar created nearly two years ago. They've been viewed millions of times. Since we redesigned FCC back in January, they seem a bit too ornate.

Also, we are considering simplifying our landing page and our message. Here's what it might look like:

Those icons are placeholders. I was wondering whether we could come up with three simple icons that are solid green on white that convey: learning to code, contributing to open source, and getting a job.

@Wes26 @kosta-xd would either of you be interested in attempting this?

2016 be like... "I'm hacking everyone"

My idea is to create an asset that plays off the popular meme: 2016 be like "I'm taking everyone"

Instead of the faces, we could include corporate logos, with the number of accounts breached below. We could leave Harambe in there as the 6th breach as a nod to the meme, or we could include the lesser known (outside of Russia) VK.com

2016 be like... "I'm hacking everyone"

Yahoo 500,000,000
Myspace 360,000,000
Linkedin 160,000,000
Dropbox 68,000,000
Tumblr 65,000,000
VK 93,000,000

Steps:

  • get the logos
  • apply the meme font
  • add some sort of Free Code Camp watermark (since if all goes well, it will be shared beyond our accounts)

Is anyone interested in helping build this asset?

Graphics for laptop sticker pack

Free Code Camp plans to sell a pack of stickers in our shop. All of these assets will be creative commons like everything else, and anyone could print them. We would print them and sell them in packs of 4 different stickers for $10 with free shipping worldwide to help cover Free Code Camp's costs.

I did a Twitter poll a while back and most people wanted 2" (5cm) round stickers (https://twitter.com/freecodecamp/status/686252785424175104), so we printed these: https://freecodecamp.com/shop

Let's discuss different ideas for stickers below. What kinds of designs would you like to see?

  • Open Data sticker
  • CamperBot sticker
  • Information wants to be Free sticker
  • Let's Pair sticker

Hi, can you tell me where I will find this file? All the images seems to be hosted on Amazon AWS and I'm not able to find them on my local setup. I would like to take up this issue.

Future Coder Onesie design for babies

@haydmills

You may have seen the "future doctor" or "future lawyer" onesies for babies. We want to create "future coder" onesies for campers and their toddlers.

Here's what TeeSpring allows in terms of dimensions:

I think we could use the FCC font, with the "bonfire function call" symbol. What do you think?
