pressure_plates's Introduction

Pressure plates

An iterative prototype in the context of my master thesis "Exploration von interaktiven und unaufdringlichen Interfaces in einer semi-public Meetup Situation" (en. "Exploration of interactive and unobtrusive interfaces in a semi-public meetup situation") WS19/30 got created.

The thesis examines the use of unobtrusive, interactive interfaces in a semi-public meetup situation. The situation "person does not integrate" was selected on the basis of a room situation analysis. Based on this analysis, different prototypes will be iteratively tested in a real meetup situation.

This prototype consists of two plates lying on the floor, that communicate with each other and present a game. The plates were refined over 3 iterations and consist of multiple metal parts that get assembled like shown in the following graphic: plate prototype assembling

Two different ESP8266 got used for the prototypes (solely on the basis of availability).

The ESPs communicate over UDP. The finalized and used code can be found here and here.

The game works in such a way that the plates rotate through different, random colours. If the plates show the same colour, the players have to press their plate. The player who presses first wins.

User tests

The prototype should be testet in real meetup situations. It was planned to carry out the user tests in mid/end March 2020. Due to the global corona crisis in 2020, no Meetups could be held. The user tests will be conducted as soon as local Meetups can be held again. If the situation does not improve in the near future, user tests may not be conducted for the time being.

Iteration

After conducting user tests with colleagues in my company, some changes were made:

  • Adding icons for better understanding
  • Adding LEDs to count how often each user has won (resetting to zero when they reached 5)
