This is a curated list of awesome open-source remakes of old games (if the old game itself is open-source, then it qualifies, too!). The remakes doesn't have to be finished products; game engines to play games in present of original content would qualify, too.

• RigelEngine: a re-implementation of Duke Nukem II in C++

• Devilution and DevilutionX: a Diablo port
• REGoth: an open source reimplementation of zEngine the engine behind Gothic and Gothic II
• Vangers: a racing/RPG hybrid made open-source by its creators, written in C++

• OpenJK: an effort to maintain and improve the game engines on which the Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast games run on, while maintaining full backwards compatibility with the existing games

• OpenTyrian: an open-source port of Tyrian from Turbo Pascal to C

• Dizgruntled: an open-source Java remake of a classic game Gruntz!
• KaM Remake (source): a good remake of Knights and Merchants in Pascal
• OpenRA (source): engine for old Westwood strategies (including C&C: Tiberian Dawn, C&C: Red Alert, Dune 2000, C&C: Tiberian Sun, C&C: Red Alert 2), written in C#
• OpenSAGE (source): a C# re-implementation of SAGE, the game engine used by a bunch of EA Pacific games, including C&C: Generals and Battle for Middle Earth
• Return to the Roots (source): a Settlers II remake written in C++
• WarCraft 2000: Nuclear Epidemic: unofficial WarCraft II spin-off with nuclear weapons and completely new engine, written in C++
