Any thoughts on these ways to show the user the difference?

Content next to the bottom button giving them a reassurance on the message.

I think it's an improvement. I'm almost thinking of changing the color of the header as well, that is dark gray right now. That might be interesting

Actually I will be adding some functionality. When insecure, I will prompt them to send email encrypted for that person with a password. Just made issue for that one #55 . I think that will help, we'll make the prompt very visible

Just wondering, why a password? Will the sender have to create the password for the new user?
How will the user become aware of the password? I guess I wonder if creating a password could create some extra friction.

What if we were to send the encrypted message (a bunch of illegible copy),
with an automated message (preceding the encrypted message) from the sender that says something like:

"[email protected] is trying to send you an encrypted message, download Cryptup for gmail to receive and decode."

Also, we can definitely make the unsecure message easily visible. I like the idea of the header changing too.

I was thinking the person sending would include a challenge question, for example:
"What was the name of your first dog?"
And answer to that question would be the password. And then, the person would not necessarily have to download CryptUP, they could just go online to decrypt that email with the response to the challenge question

The other approach would work as well, but it would I think be more friction - it would prompt the other user to sign up, and the first email (with the actual content) could not go out yet. It would have to be sent again after that guy signs up. So the guy signs up and can't see the email yet.. it's more confusing, I think.

Got ya, I see what you're going with there.
The user doesn't have to have to sign up to get the message. Which is less of a pain.

Although, with a little more friction, more people might sign up ;)
I'm cool with either way.

ok so there's a product change: email coming out of the "secure" window will always be encrypted, one way or another. So we can go ahead and make the whole window "secure looking". Maybe a green header instead of black.

This is the result, I think pretty good for now, what do you think @mondo989 ?

Yeah, it works.

How do you feel about having the header transitioning colors relative to the sender's email addresses?
It's green if all addresses are encrypted.

We start with it being gray, (somewhat similar to Gmail) and as they type in and it's to a sender that's secure maybe there's a soft transition to green, and orange if there's a mixed.
If there's an invalid email, it stays gray..

Having it green all the time, I don't know if that is the best.

tomholub avatar tomholub commented on September 26, 2024

Well right now it's such that regardless what senders you put in, you end up sending that message encrypted, so that's why always green.

I'm thinking, for now, the only way I'm missing is maybe the logo on the left side of the header (or in the button instead of the lock) and I think it will be good for now.

Unless we want to add very light pattern in the background, like a very subtle tile. To experiment

I think this is managed well for now, the sending window is very different than normal gmail window, and I think will only get more different over time.

The only thing left is that I would like to put some subtle pattern as a background.

I like this one
