Does it not make more sense to write an XHR/RESTful provider, and you can do what you want with the data server side? How does a browser interact with leveldb directly?

This would let us use filer in node.js, since I would like to implement some extra features that are not supported by node js module.

I'm wondering how you want to deal with transactions here, since I don't see a great way to accomplish this, see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9022691/what-constitutes-a-transaction-layer-when-talking-about-database-systems

Transactions are important in the browser context because the file system may be opened multiple times (even across tabs) and that can cause bad things to happen (Filer is also a shared file system). There's less danger of this happening by accident in node, so I'm OK with a LevelUp provider and deferring the transactional layer for another time.
