backgrounds's Issues

Time-based transition is broken

At 6:03 PM today, using the time-based version of Fedora 38's default wallpaper, my wallpaper abruptly transitioned from light to almost pure dark. I thought it was a GNOME bug until I noticed that if you look really closely, you can see very faint clouds and dots:

Screenshot from 2023-03-26 18-06-46

Hopefully there's an obvious problem with the animation. If not, I'd recommend removing the time-based version.

missing symlink /usr/share/backgrounds/default.xml

Can you please add a symlink /usr/share/backgrounds/default.xml
which links to /usr/share/backgrounds/f32/default/f32.xml

ln -s /usr/share/backgrounds/f32/default/f32.xml /usr/share/backgrounds/default.xml

MATE desktop use a gsettings key to define the default fedora background.

[org.mate.background]
picture-filename='/usr/share/backgrounds/f32/default/f32.xml'

As you can see because of the f32 in directory i have to update every release the gesetting key to match the new default background.
For this reason the mate-compiz f32 spin will use the f31 background, because we are in beta freeze.
So, adding a symlink /usr/share/backgrounds/default.xml without a fedora release number would help me a lot. In result i don't have to edit the gsettings key every release.
I am sure that is helpful for other desktops too.

Thank you

Wallpaper is indexed color

For some reason the processing of the wallpaper includes indexing colors to 8bit. Not 8bit per channel, but 8bit indexed color with Floyd Steinberg dithering. Not only does this not result in smaller filesize, the dithering doesn't make the crazy color banding disappear either.

F38 Default Dark does not show up in Budgie Control Center

In Budgie Control Center, the night wallpaper does not show up as it is listed as filename-dark (presumably for GNOME Control Center's light vs dark selection) rather than having a dedicated wallpaper entry in the gnome-backgrounds-f38.xml

Could we either:

  1. Get it added as a wallpaper entry in gnome-backgrounds-f38.xml so it shows up separately
  2. Alternatively have a f38-backgrounds-budgie that installs an f38-budgie.xml in /usr/share/gnome-background-properties that has the dark image. This would depend on f38-backgrounds-gnome to pull in the "day" image as well.

I'd be open to providing a PR to add either option, I just imagine someone else would be doing the release + package update that includes the desired subpackage.

Doing either will be beneficial to the Fedora Budgie Spin. The night wallpaper could then be selected by the end user and I could do the work of updating budgie-desktop-defaults to have a f38 subpackage that requires the f38-backgrounds-budgie and sets the night backgrounds as the default (which ties in well with defaulting to dark theme). Otherwise I'll just be shipping F38 Budgie Spin with a wallpaper from budgie-backgrounds (which is the current situation).

Clarify license

As part of https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/SPDX_Licenses_Phase_1
I wanted to check what SPDX string will be for this package. Currently, the spec file uses: CC-BY-SA. Which is ambiguous:

 $ license-fedora2spdx 'CC-BY-SA'
Warning: more options on how to interpret CC-BY-SA. Possible options: ['CC-BY-SA-4.0', 'CC-BY-SA-3.0', 'CC-BY-SA-3.0-DE', 'CC-BY-SA-3.0-AT', 'CC-BY-SA-2.5', 'CC-BY-SA-2.1-JP', 'CC-BY-SA-2.0', 'CC-BY-SA-2.0-UK', 'CC-BY-SA-1.0']
{{pick CC-BY-SA choice}}

Looking at this project and the code - it seems that the correct one will be 'CC-BY-SA-4.0'. But I am puzzled by the presence of:

Is anything licensed under this license? If not, should these files be present here? If yes, should the license be changed?

Animated wallpaper bug or feature?

Update 32.2.2 fixed the problem with missing wallpaper by default, thanks. But now you can see not only the F32 animated wallpaper, but also separately dawn, day etc. Is it not more appropriate to do as in Adwaita animated wallpaper, when only the choice of animation itself is visible, but not its frames separately?

Logo not legible with default F38 wallpaper

In Workstation we show the Fedora logo over the background, using a gnome-shell extension. This is what it looks like in F38:

As you can see, the legibility is fairly low. Not a good look.

This issue is only present when using the light UI style and wallpaper. When the dark style is used, the contrast is fine:

Almost-identical KDE/Plasma 'metadata' files shipped upstream and downstream

So, this seems pretty bizarre. In this ('upstream') repo we have the file default/fXX-metadata.desktop - currently https://github.com/fedoradesign/backgrounds/blob/master/default/f31-metadata.desktop . In the 'downstream' package repository we have an almost-identical fXX-metadata.desktop file - currently https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/f31-backgrounds/blob/master/f/f31-metadata.desktop . They are nearly the same, except the section names in the downstream file all start with X- while the ones in the upstream file don't.

In the end, both files wind up in the f31-backgrounds-kde package, but in different places. The 'upstream' file winds up as /usr/share/wallpapers/F31/metadata.desktop. The downstream file winds up as /usr/share/plasma/desktoptheme/F31/metadata.desktop. This of course means we have twice as many chances to get something wrong when bumping from release to release, as someone has to remember to change all the numbers in both files.

Why are things like this? This seems bad. :)

fedora-backgrounds-32.1.4: broken symlinks

Hello,

When installing this new version I get links in /usr/share/wallpapers/F32/contents/images/ pointing to nothing. It seems they point to ../../backgrounds/f32/default/f32.png , but f32.png is installed under two levels upper -> ../../../../backgrounds/

Thanks

Opinion about the background

Disclaimer: This is all my personal opinion.

I feel that the current background for F35 is not very deep and it's too chaotic and strange to be a Fedora background. The colors and patterns seem off, and the coloring and lighting do not match with the look of the rest of the Fedora Project or with any of the previous backgrounds. I understand the need to innovate with new backgrounds, but all the backgrounds should still follow the same simple philosophy: simple, deep, and impactful.

I think that the pattern that the background adopts is too chaotic and strange. The pattern that the background follows is too curvy as well. It does not look orderly or simplistic whatsoever. The backgrounds that have been in other Fedora releases have always been simple and deep. Fedora backgrounds typically follow a very simple pattern that is then expanded and given depth and color. This background simply looks like someone went into GIMP, rendered a random fractal from the preset fractals, applied some color work, and called it a day. It does not look like deep, stunning, or impressive.

The TL;DR is that the current background is an eyesore to look at.

To fix it, I suggest taking inspiration from other Fedora releases. Also, at the pagure page for the background, there are some amazing backgrounds that don't have anything to do with the strange 'fractal' look. Two of the backgrounds that have caught my attention are this concept art made by riecatnor and this render.

If using an alternate background style is not viable, I suggest making the background darker and more blue or to use a more complicated render like this one. I would also suggest looking at this concept art on pagure.

All of these pieces of art share the same qualities: geometric patterns, deep colors and depths, and stunning visuals.

This is simply a suggestion and a complaint about the current background of Fedora 35. I understand if it may be too late to reconsider other background options, or if the team has already chosen this background for some mystical, wise reason. Please consider my suggestions to fix the current background

Thank you for your time!

fedora-backgrounds-33.0.7 installs broken symlinks

It seems to install these bogus symlinks:

It also seems "extras" wallpaper is only a solid blue one... but that is maybe a design decision for f33 :/
Thanks a lot!

Some wallpapers look to be missing in fedora-backgrounds-32.2.0

After building and installing fedora-backgrounds-32.2.0 I see some symlinks pointing to non existant files as /usr/share/backgrounds/f32/extras/ambosli-sunset.jpg , /usr/share/backgrounds/f32/extras/gardens-on-the-bay-in-singapore.jpg and /usr/share/backgrounds/f32/extras/isarfrost.png seem to be missing :/

Thanks

Star movement in F33 animated background: intentional?

In the current version of the F33 backgrounds, the starfield moves. In night and dawn it's more to the left, in day and dusk it's more to the right. This leads to an odd effect during the transitions, where the starfield kinda fades out at one location and fades in at the other. In the middle of the transition it's sort of duplicated with each one being very faded, like this:

dupestars

is this intentional, or an oversight?
