Kong not running after installed on MacOS

Environment

MacOS Catalina v10.15.4 - MacbookPro mid 2014

Description

I was following along with the tutorial on how to deploy nextjs applications under different root paths: https://levelup.gitconnected.com/deploy-your-nextjs-application-on-a-different-base-path-i-e-not-root-1c4d210cce8a (great article btw).

I installed dev-kong and ran kong start which starts local Kong server, and got this as result in my prompt

Starting Kong
Starting t_kong-database_1 ... 
Starting t_kong-database_1 ... done

t_kong_1 is up-to-date

But when I run kong status, I receive this weird error: Failed, check if Kong running first

I have nginx installed by homebrew, and I don't know if this could be an issue, or if dev-kong is independent from nginx installation
