Note when I do a proc.io.stdout = STDOUT
it does work fine, so the API appears to be working fine.
However, why don't pipes work here? They clearly work with the Windows API since the Opscode folks appear to use it successfully (mixlib-shellout
is used by Chef which works fine on Windows)

One difference I spotted is they use this "get_osfhandle" method (that appears out of nowhere) on the fileno/io objects and ChildProcess doesn't. Necessary?

Actually, just below the line I linked in the last comment there are a lot of shenanigans in order to "inherit" any handles apparently. Perhaps the childprocess simply isn't inheriting IO.pipe because its not inheritable?
