The strictness is necessary on MRI, where fork() on *nix and CreateProcess on Windows won't let us share the StringIO instance directly with the child process.
It may be possible by doing like the JVM - add an intermediate layer that sets up pipes with the child and then run threads that continuously pump those to write to the IOs provided by the user, but it seemed like a lot of work just to support StringIO (patches welcome though). Any reason Aruba can't use a Tempfile instead?
