Current facility in arctools for gerating markdown-format documentation given a reference to a filter is okay. But, it's not super friendly. It would be better to ditch handlebars (not needed). And, encapsulate the default template behavior allowing for user to override via a callback.
Also, the original design goal was to separate document data from document template so was to allow others to override the templates. That's nice. But, let's drop template support and just get the docs generated in any format first. Later, we'll have much better ways to handle this.
I HATE writing chains of filters manually. Specifically, I hate thinking through and maintaining the relationships between filter specs in an arrangement of filters that do anything nontrivial.
This will be simpler to manage later w/higher-order solutions.
