Cannot change the wallpaper

Changing wallpaper does not seem to be working on my machine. The default wallpaper remains applied no matter which one is selected in the wallpaper switcher window. I also tried to see system logs to identify any issues, but I am not sure if there is a specific place where I should be looking for it. As a side note, I am using a two monitor desktop setup and my home drive is network-mounted. I can provide further details on demand.

Remove "Rob Bye"

I'm not feeling it as much as the other wallpapers. It's kind of muted, it maxes out below 4K, it's pretty soft, and it has people in it. As we add more wallpapers, I think it's one of the weaker ones that could go.

Automate fake screenshots

Crazy idea inspired from the olden days of our wallpaper experiment:

  1. A bot takes a submitted image from the PR
  2. Determines if the top is light or dark
  3. Overlays the right version of a transparent desktop PNG on top with the panel and dock
  4. Comments on the PR with the image

We could get like 16:9, 16:10, 3:2, and ultrawide versions automatically to see it in a variety of setups.

Upgrading package from 6.0.0 to 6.1.0 breaks greeter in elementary OS 5.1

What Happened?

Upgrading package from 6.0.0 to 6.1.0 breaks greeter in elementary OS 5.1. I noticed it on one of my systems, then on the other, also running 5.1, I installed all updates except wallpapers. Rebooted, greeter was fine. Upgraded wallpapers, rebooted, greeter was borked (in the same way as in this reddit post).

Installing wallpapers from source fixes this issue (with ninja install).

I noticed, that ninja install added files and one link in /usr/share/backgrounds that weren't there after upgrading package.

I suspect that d1781a5 is the culprit, as it is the only difference between 6.0 and 6.1 in deb packaging, and installing from source seems fine, but without building deb package I can't verify that.

This happended on two systems that were running 5.1.

Steps to Reproduce

Upgrade package from 6.0.0 to 6.1.0 in elementary OS 5.1.

Expected Behavior

Upgrading package from 6.0.0 to 6.1.0 does not break greeter in elementary OS 5.1.

Add a Pull Request Template

We should come up with a pull request template in which the submitter must address some things like:

The original author of the wallpaper
A link to where it can be downloaded
Why they think it's a good photo

Update copyright PR instructions in README

The README instructions for submitting PRs with new wallpapers says to edit the debian/copyright file, however this file isn't in the master branch (I later found it in the deb-packaging branch). These instructions should be updated to reflect this (and make it easier for new contributors to submit PRs).

@cassidyjames said of this in #99 (comment):

Ah, yeah we need to update the instructions for copyright info (or auto-build that file in CI or something). It's in a different branch, but that requires another PR to update.

Transparent panel on the top look less beautiful

Hi I'm nardiyansah from Indonesia. I've been using elementary for several months and today I find transparent look less beautiful in some wallpaper. I just want to tell you about it.

An Undersea Photo

Cassidy proposed a jellyfish shot, but it wasn't quite the right stuff. An undersea photo would be cool though, so noting it here in case we wanna gather ideas

automatic install script missing

A small script installing the wallpapers system-wide (to /usr/share/backgrounds/elementary or something like that) would be appreciated, so no manual copying of the files has to be done (a similar, convenient script is often included with icon themes and GTK themes).

I think a simple CMake solution would be preferable for an elementary project, though.

adaptive wallpaper

use komorebi to adapt the background to the theme or two versions of the wallpaper one for the light theme and one for the dark theme

Are usernames allowed as attribution name?

I'm working on a PR to add a photo I took and I was wondering if I can use my username as attribution. Currently I have it as "Allie ChildishGiant" and then a link to the unsplash page. Thanks for any guidance :)

some thoughts about 3d rendered wallpapers

I have a little weird vision for elementary wallpapers that I cooking in my head for a long time.
don't know if its synchronize with the vision of the core developers, so I just dropping it here.

making wallpapers in 3d software like blender.

why?
in short, a lot of control.

  1. a lot of control over the composition. making sure that the top of the image is clean and have the same brightness all over the horizontal line, so the icons shows clearly without the need for black stripe. keeping the dock area clean for good readability.
  2. its the easiest way to create a lot of wallpapers that have day and night versions. for light and dark modes. you can keep it at the exact position with changings just for the lighting. or a little bit of changes to make it intresting. we have the choice.
it even open the posability to more then 2 modes per wallpaper. (night, sunshine, day, sunrise, evening)
  3. its a great way to make a distinguish style to 'elementary wallpapers'. it can be cartoony, it can be foggy landscapes, it can be nature-inspired pastel-colored abstract images. we can keep it realistic like now, and decide about more specific colors or somthing.

its just more control.

I know its a little bit overdo. but I think It might be nice for 3D artist thats like elementary and don't know how to code, and search for ways to contribute.

what do you think?

Define a new minimum wallpaper size

HiDPI is now a thing and most of the wallpapers we're shipping are scaled down. I think we need to define a new minimum size that sits closer to 4K

Feature Request: Meson Build Instructions

Problem

Adds instructions for using meson to build the project.

Proposal

I'd like to request meson build instructions in the README.

Picture selection (list format) must choose "Open"

When selecting a picture under "custom", one must select "open" when there is nothing selected to get a thumbnail view.
This should default to thumbnail view from the beginning.
"Open" should be renamed to "Set Wallpaper" when a picture is selected.
It should be grey if nothing is selected.
Double clicking should select and set and close the dialog.
