translations's Introduction

The Dododex Taming Calculator for Ark: Survival Evolved is being translated into every language and your help is needed! Translations are crowdsourced — edits made to this Github project will be included in a future version of the app. Continued edits and new languages will be added through Github.

Translators get Dododex Pro for free! After contributing your language's translations, contact me (dan14lev[at]gmail.com) to get a promo code for the ad-free version of Dododex.

Translate Dododex

1. TRANSLATING DODODEX

  1. Open translations.js and click "Edit"

  2. If your language is not there, add it.

    1. To add a new language, copy and paste the entire English section ("en").
    2. Change the "en" to your language's code (list of language codes)). Regional languages (es-mx vs. es) are only recommended if the translations will have a noticable difference. When possible, try to translate for the general language to simplify the project.
    3. Translate each of the phrases.
  3. Translate the phrases into your language.

Look at the English version of a phrase, and then add a translation to the corresponding section for your language (language codes are listed below). It's best to translate from English to your language, as other languages may not yet be verified.

If you are unsure of any translation, please keep it blank so someone else can add it later. Do not add notes to your translation, or add multiple translations. Instead, open an Issue (detailed below) to discuss the correct translation.

  4. Add your name to the list of translators. If you'd like, feel free to add your name and (optionally) a URL the bottom of the file.

  5. Submit your changes This will be submitted as a pull request and will be approved.

(If you have any trouble with these instructions, but still want to help, please contact me at dan14lev at gmail.com or Join the Translator Chat!)

2. TRANSLATING CREATURE NAMES & CATEGORIES

  1. Open creatures.json or categories.json and click "Edit."

  2. Add translated names in your language.

If a creature (or entire language) is not officially translated in-game, DO NOT translate it, Dododex will fallback to the English version. The goal is to make the creature names accessible, but expected -- don't translate JUST to translate. If "Ovis" is not translated in-game, do not translate it to "Sheep" in your language, as users would likely look for "Ovis" on Dododex. If a creature does not have a translation, simply omit it rather than creating a copy of the English translation. However, for not-Latin characters please consider transliterating if you think it would be more helpful to speakers of your language.

IMPORTANT: Regional versions of languages (For example: Brazilian Portuguese / "PT-BR") are also supported. However, it is beneficial to also have the base language ("PT"), since all PT-XX languages will fall back on the base one. If there are any discrepencies between regional languages, please open an issue on Github so it can be logged.

All creature names and categories should be in Title Case (Example: "Attack Drone" not "attack drone").

Please keep languages in alphabetical order, according to their language code.

  3. Add your name to translations.js if you'd like to be credited!

NOTES

  • Phrasing & Punctuation: If the English phrase includes characters like exclaimation points, parenthases, colons, ellipses, be sure these are included if they are applicable in your language. If you are unsure, try to understand the context of the phrase and try your best to match it in your language.
  • Abbreviations & Long Words: Some English terms are intentionally abbreviated because of a lack of interface space ("pts.", "mins."). If possible, please try to abbreviate these in your language into something short that people would understand. In addition, there are some terms in English that are already short and also need to fit in a small space. For example, "Use" and "Max" are headings on the main taming table that need to fit in a small column. If possible, try to keep these words short. Abbreviate if necessary. A different, shorter word may be used if it its meaning is still applicable.
  • Special Characters: Special (non-Latin) characters such as ä or 渡 can be inserted into the file directly without translating them to HTML entities (don't use ä or 渡). If you add a double quote, please escape it with a backslash: \".
  • Submit Your Progress: If you don't have much time to volunteer and prefer to translate these phrases over many days, it's best to submit your progress ocassionally in case someone else submits translations for that same language.
  • Starting A Discussion: If you're unsure of any translations, have questions about a phrase or its context, or think that a translation is incorrect, start a discussion by creating an issue. Please include the language in the title of the issue.
  • Variables: Some phrases have variables in them where a term will be inserted into the sentence. These are indicated with a {0}. For example, There are {0} creatures could become There are 50 creatures and the number would increment as more creatures are added. All translations must include this variable. If phrasing in your language can vary depending on what the variable actually is (for example, grammatical gender), please do your best to accomidate what the variable could be. If appropriate, rephrase so the line works better in your language.

translations's Issues

Should we use special characters or HTML entities?

Hi,

how it looks with letters like ä,ö,ü,ß
In german we have many of that. Can i use it or should i use
ae for ä
oe for ö
ue for ü
ss for ß

or canwe use html named entities like
ä for ä

or anything else

greatings from germany

IT : Sabertooth

Sabertooth it's translated as "Smilodonte" in Dododex, this quite inconvenient because the ingame name is displayed as "Tigre dai denti a sciabola".. at least on PS4, last version.
Took me very long time to figure this out, I was assuming it was missing till today.

If the translation is good accordingly to other versions of the game, I can now live with it, close the issue :)

Just wanted to let you know this small thing.. and thank you for the great job!

Translations needed for App Name

Hey guys, I thought I'd open an issue for this one since this translation is very important and going to require some discussion. The app's name (iOS only) is limited to 50 characters. I took a stab at it for each language

The ideal name is:

Dododex Taming Calculator for Ark: Survival Evolved

However, if that doesn't work, it can be shortened to "Dododex Taming Calculator - Ark: Survival Evolved". Keeping "Taming Calculator" is really ideal, but if absolutely impossible, it can be shortened to just "Dododex for Ark: Survival Evolved". But it's better to shorten it than for it to sound strange.

Translations

Spanish

Dododex Calculadora de Doma: Ark: Survival Evolved

French

Dododex pour Ark: Survival Evolved

It doesn't seem possible to include "Calculateur de Dressage" in the title. "Dododex Calculateur Dressage: Ark Survival Evolved" doesn't work, does it? Does it need the "de"?

German

Dododex Taming-Rechner fürf Ark: Survival Evolved

Italian

Dododex Calcolatore Taming - Ark: Survival Evolved

"Taming Calculator" is currently translated as "Calcolatore del taming." Does "Calcolatore Taming" work? Or should it just be "Dododex per Ark: Survival Evolved"?

Portuguese

Dododex para Ark: Survival Evolved

Chinese

Dododex 驯服计算器 Ark: Survival Evolved

Google Translate seemed to indicate that the word "for" isn't needed in Chinese? Let me know if there are any issues with this translation.

Russian

Dododex для Ark: Survival Evolved

It seems impossible to fit "Калькулятор приручения" into Russian.

[Spanish] Some names translated wrong

A few users reported the following corrections with the translations. Could someone review if these are correct?

Should not be translated:

  • Acatina is Achatina
  • Boa Titan is Titanoboa
  • Caballo is Equus
  • Carcinos is Karkinos

Wrong translation:

  • Elemental se piedra is Golem de piedra
  • Fororrácido is Ave del terror

Primary navigation buttons need shortening

In the latest version of the app, the primary navigation includes five items: Info, Stats, Breeding, Tips, More. Because these items are horizontal, they are really restricted on space. Some of the translations are very long. I've included a list of terms that are somewhat long.

  • Not all of them need to be shortened, but if any of these have a shorter translation.
  • If any of these words can be abbreviated and still be completely clear, please let me know. (For example, I use "stats" instead of "statistics" and "info" instead of "information")
  • The terms "info" and "more" do not need to exactly translated. (For example, "more" could be translated to anything that implies "additional" or "extra")

In the comments, please comment if the word can be shortened or abbreviated. If not, please comment so I can mark it off.

Anglicisms

Hello,

My name is Nestor and I'm trying to help in the translated into Spanish .
In Spain the people use a lot of anglicisms in ark . For example

English : Spanish : Anglicism
Taming : Taming : Tamear
Server : Servidor : Server
Crafting : Fabricar : Craftear
level : nivel : level

Dont exist a word for Starving, the most similar is "hambre" but means hungry , not starving

And Kibble in the translation of the game they use the word "croqueta" thant means Croquette, and i think that is better use "Pienso" that is animal feed (Dogs, cats, etc)

I need advice.
Thanks

Country Code for Traditional Chinese Users in Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc

Excuse me, I am an Ark player coming from Hong Kong 🇭🇰 and would like to translate the names of creatures, and other stuff in the future.
However, there are two sets of Chinese character, traditional one and simplified one (the current "zh" one). Their meaning are 100% the same, that's why I double-quoted the "dialect" (not because of the wrong spelling in the README file
For example, the Dodo is called "渡渡乌" in S.C. and "渡渡鳥" in T.C., same meaning, same pronunciation, just different characters (and they have some common words like "渡".
In Hong Kong and Taiwan, we use T.C.. (It is kinda annoying to see the simplified one when using Dododex 😅
In Android development, this should be classified as "zh-hk" or "zh-tw" but the README file said that I could only use two-letter country code.

So I am writing to ask what country code I should use for Traditional Chinese. (I, as a Hong Konger, suggest "hk" but Taiwan and some Asia countries use T.C. too)
(Be careful, according to the Hong Kong version of National Security Law, it's illegal to say Hong Kong is a country. And that Law applies to all people in the world, you will be charged if you come to Hong Kong. Ridiculous, right?
