fonts-jar's Introduction

Fonts Jar

⚠️ This extension is currently not available in the Chrome Web Store.

Fonts Jar is a useful Chrome extension to save your favorite fonts when websites do not have an "add to favorites" feature by default. The goal is to support an always increasing number of websites, in order to be able to use this extension as a cross-website utility and typography management tool.

⬇️ How to install

Fonts Jar is currently not available for download from the Chrome Web Store, because it is still in beta. If you want to install it, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Download the latest release
  2. Go to your Chrome extensions (type "chrome://extensions/" in Chrome)
  3. Enable developer mode by clicking on the toggle in the top right corner
  4. Unzip the latest release you have downloaded in step 1
  5. Click on "Load unpacked" and select the unzipped release you have obtained in step 4

🔄 How to update

⚠️ Do NOT update the extension by removing it and re-loading it from scratch every time. You will lose your data!

Until this extension is not available for download from the Chrome Web Store, you need to follow these steps in order to update the extension:

  1. Download the latest release
  2. Go to your Chrome extensions (type "chrome://extensions/" in Chrome)
  3. Enable developer mode by clicking on the toggle in the top right corner
  4. Unzip the latest release you have downloaded in step 1
  5. Place the unzipped release in the same place where you had placed the previous version. If you are unsure where to place it, you can click on "Details" on the extension card and scroll down to "Source". There you will find the path to use
  6. Click on "Update"

fonts-jar's Issues

Rewrite popup using a framework

The entire extension is currently written using vanilla TS, which is fine for most of the extension. The popup is however a bit clunky and it would be easier to work on it if it was coded with a framework (e.g. Next.js, Svelte)

Add support for collections

Collections will allow users to arrange in folders the fonts they have added to Fonts Jar. For example, one could create a collection for specific styles or use cases.

Setup CI pipeline

The CI pipeline must be able to perform the following things:

  • Automatically create new releases when pushing to main with a new tag
  • When creating new releases, attach a fresh build zip file

Add support for importing/exporting via JSON

It's important that users are able to import and export they fonts they have saved. This allows backups and to restore them, and it's particularly important when updating to a newer Fonts Jar version that might introduce breaking changes.

To-Do:

  • Create options page
