Couldn't you simply invalidate the timer when the view disappears? Usually you set up timers to update UI related things while the view is on screen.

So this works just the same. -dealloc is called.

- (void)viewDidDisappear:(BOOL)animated {
    [_timer invalidate];
}

I understand it's a little bit annoying to take care of this, but it's not that hard.
