Could this mode be packaged for direct installation using package.el via MELPA or similar?

I would like this mode to also highlight any trailing whitespace that still falls inside the expression (or, to provide an option to toggle this feature if not everyone wants it to behave this way).

For example, assume that _ marks a highlighted section. Currently the mode behaves like this

(a
__b
__c

__d
__e)

if point is inside this sexp, and only highlights leading whitespace. However, I would like the mode to instead highlight it like this:

(a_____________________________________________________________________________
__b____________________________________________________________________________
__c____________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
__d____________________________________________________________________________
__e)

so that the background is fully highlighted up to the right edge of the window. Notice that the empty lines would get completely highlighted (such as the one between c and d in the example above).

FWIW I use doom emacs and there when I use visual mode to select text inside parentheses with vi), this behaves in the way described in the second example above.

if the expression it should highlight begins on the line above hl-line overwrites the highlighting.
