comic-backup's Issues

Script intermittently gets stuck transitioning from page 1

Occasionally the script seems to get stuck moving from page 1 (the cover) to page 2. This may be more of a website issue though. Basically what happens is that it hits up page 1 then tries to move to page 2 and the screen never updates. Now then I do have a workaround.

Workaround: Close the tab that is trying to capture the comic then start the scan again. This time it will either work (if you have prompt to continue off) or ask if you want to start at either page 2 or the beginning (if the prompt is on). If you get the 2nd tell it to continue from page 2. The backup script is smart enough to detect it isn't on page 1 and goes back to that and actually works.

Why it works: From the best I can tell page 2 doesn't show at first due to a possible transition. When you reload the page it starts at page 2 automatically which is now downloaded. The script then goes back and is able to start at page 1 normally.

This isn't related to #25 though. I just checked that one and it is indeed as described over there.

Scan keeps hanging

My scans keep hanging at various completion percentages. I've tried both CBZ and single image downloads but the behavior is the same.

It seems like the Reader isn't loading the next page or something - perhaps the reader is hanging for some reason?

I've fiddled with the different timeouts but I can't correlate change in behavior with my edits.

First exploit scan not possible

Hi

I'm having a problem trying to use this extension. I cannot execute the first exploit scan. It needs to click first on 'single page' view, then on 'double page', but the comics I'm trying to backup are in a forced 'double page' view, and nor the single page nor the double page view works.
It looks this way: http://i.imgur.com/OW5XRZv.png
But neither of the buttons do anything.

Any fix? Or at least a workaround?

Backup from comic view

This plugin is awesome, but only works from the my-comics view.

B/c this only view only shows "recent" comics, meaning the plugin can't be used to reliably backup all comics.

Is there anyway the plugin could provide a scan button from within the actual comic viewer?

Cannot seem to get this working...

I'm using Chrome Version 39.0.2171.95 (64-bit) on OS X 10.9.5. It 'looks' like the extension is installed - I first installed using the first recommended method - the extension is listed as installed but it does not seem to work so I uninstalled and tried did the same thing with the second installation method and got the same results.

The problem that I'm experiencing is that I do not see the red "Activate Scan" button anywhere. Unfortunately, I do not have any experience debugging chrome extensions. If you have some pointers to help me out I can maybe provide some more helpful info as to what may be going on.

PNG download stops after page 156

I see there had been problem with PNG download before and I noted that me last download too stopped after page 156.

If the backup is done into a cbz container the extension crashes. If done into single files the backup runs to the end but the last page actually written to the filesystem is again 156.

I tried both Chrome and Opera Next with the same result.

Single file download into JPG worked fine.

And thanks for the extension. Buying books so much more fun when you can make DRM free backups.

Upgraded to 2.1.0 and no longer get past 0%

I've tried performing a new initial scan, but it makes no difference. I've tried comics that backed up perfectly before and also new ones which I don't yet have a backup for.

I have tried disableing Guided View in the Comixology settings, but it doesn't help.

Marvel Infinite Comics are not able to be backed up

I'm not sure whether it's because they're a different style or not, but Marvel's Infinite Comics such as Original Sin: Secret Avengers Infinite Comic #1 cannot be backed up, it simply hangs at 0% on page one and goes no further. I've tried with both Original Sin: Secret Avengers Infinite Comics and with Daredevil's move to San Francisco.

Failed - No file

This morning, after backing up a few comics, I suddenly started seeing this problem. After the plugin finishes backing up the comic and then goes to create the zip (cbz, actually) file, my download entry in Chrome says "Failed - No file". I got the same thing trying a couple different comics. I was able to back up a book as single images to zip myself (which is a little more annoying, but doable), so I assume whatever is performing the zipping is the problem.

Not getting asked to backup comic anymore

I just tried to back up a couple books today, but when I open the viewer, I'm no longer getting the banner at the top of the page asking if I want to back up the comic. Has there been a change on their side?

(Yes, I double-checked to make sure the extension was enabled.)

Downloaded Comics Missing Many Pages

I realized, while reading a comic, that I was missing some pages. Turns out the 32-page comic I was reading was actually a 50-page comic, omitting pages randomly.

I tweaked the settings to hopefully capture everything. No go. I am up to 6000ms, and it is actually giving me even fewer pages. This bug is completely killing my use of the tool, and hindering my reading experience.

Background tab crashes after hitting scan button

I'm running 2.3.2, but this seems to be a reemergence of the issue described in #47 : when I hit the scan button, the background tab crashes. I also get a crash if I try to click Read with Comxiology Backup active. If I disable it, I'm able to read comics normally.

Bad cbz file with version 2.0.1

I tried comixology-backup 2.0.1 (OS X 10.9.5, Chrome 37.0.2062.122) with a 174 pages comics and I allway get a bad cbz file. When I try to unzip the archive I get multiple

attempt to seek before beginning of zipfile
(please check that you have transferred or created the zipfile in the
appropriate BINARY mode and that you have compiled UnZip properly)

messages and a lot of pages are missing. I then installed the version at commit 66ad3e1 and then, even If the import it more longer (a lot more), the downloaded file is correct and no page is missing.

Additional comic sites

I understand this tool is currently designed with Comixology in mind, but it would be nice to add other sites, like say Dark Horse. I'm still studying the code to see if I can add anything to it, but I have looked at Dark Horse's site and it appears their viewer actually downloads the images to your computer and then clears them when you leave. (I was able to access the full size images using Chrome web tools).

Request: Specify Download Folder

I have a script setup that scans a specific folder for my comics. Would it be possible to get an option that allows you to set the download folder as something over than the default chrome download folder? For me I used %USER%/Download/Comics. It's not a big deal but it would be nice to have to find each folder and move it before a scan is done.

Thank you.

"Scan Comic" buttons don't show when changing page of a series

The "Scan Comic" button does not appear when clicking a link to a new page of a series (when you have more than 20 issues). This also happens when clicking back to page 1.

Current workaround: simply refresh the page, and the buttons appear again.

No more automatic filenames

I upgraded to the newest version of Chrome yesterday (35.0.1916.114 m), and since then the extension seems unable to get the name of the book being backed up from the tab. I have the cbz option set, but the file that gets saved is a long string of hex numbers that ends in .zip. I can manually rename these, but it's kind of a pain with a large collection. (Don't get me wrong, I'm still infinitely greatful that you've made it as easy to back up my collection as you have.) I also tried single image saving for a trade, and all the files were called download.jpg, download (2).jpg, etc.

Tab crashes when trying to scan after switching to Amazon sign in

Hey,
For some reason I switched over to Amazon sign in and after but after I did, the scan / setup button works opens a new tab as expected but after trying to load for a but the background tab crashes (not the browser). Worked fine before but unfortunately I can't switch back to a non-amazon account to test if it's definitely that.

I'm currently using Chrome Version 50.0.2640.0 canary (64-bit) with latest version of the extension if that helps.

leaves out pages when copied and pasted to different hard drive

Hi there , first I wanted to say thank you SO much for writing this program ! :) .. it's really nice to be able to take full ownership of the comics I paid good money for ! :P

I have however run into a little problem :( ... the add-on to comixology works fine as long as I keep the downloaded comic anywhere on the C drive where comixology is installed... however I like to keep my documents on a separate drive within my computer , frees up space on my SSD hard drive (which is the C drive) and if I have to reinstall Windows 8 on the C drive that way I don't lose all my documents too :) .. the documents are stored on a SATA hard drive.

Whenever I try to copy and paste the downloaded comic from my C drive to a different drive (for example the " E " drive letter that has been assigned to my SATA hard drive or my USB thumb drive I use for backups) , it doesn't copy and paste the complete comic... it'll leave out a random number of pages towards the very end of the comic....

Thanks so much for reading this and again I know I speak for all of us when I say I really appreciate you creating this program ! :)

Manga backup fails

Trying to backup manga with 189 double pages. Tried saving as single images and it fails at 98% or 182 pages. It gives the error Aw, Snap Google Chrome ran out of memory while trying to display this webpage. I setup comic-backup using a standard comic.

Thanks for the help.

UUID filenames instead of comic titles

Hello,

I'm having an issue backing up any comics from comixology. I backed up dozens last year, but ever since the new update, I haven't been able to backup any properly. Instead of saving in the usual cbz format, they save as file codes titled "a51ee388-7632-4d3b-8384-b7d653d3aec4" and other names like that one.

At first, I assumed it was the comic length, but even normal comics that 23-27 pages produce the same results. I have the most updated version of both Chrome and Comixology Backup. I'm using Windows 10. Saving in CBZ format. Jpg page format. Minimum page swap interval is 600 ms. Page skip delay is 1200 ms.

Please help. I have no idea what could be causing this.

Thank you!

Line down 2-page spread

Just ran across this today and it installed fine. In the process of backup up my Disney/Marvel Star Wars library. It's working fine, except that I've noticed that on 2-page spreads there's a line down the middle as if it's two separate pages. When I view in the Comixology Reader on PC or in the Comixology app on my tablet, it's an unbroken image. Is there a setting that I need to change to avoid this, or is this just how it is? Not complaining at all... what I have now is better than what I had before. After collecting 4500 comics and running into space issues, I went digital a year ago, but have been bothered by the idea that my library could disappear on a publisher's whim.

Thanks very much!

Reintroduce uncompressed zipping

Uncompressed zipping was removed as a side effect of the new zipping implementation.

Some comic readers do not support compressed cbz files though.

2.0 Update creating small files with mostly blank pages

I've tried backing up a few comics with the new 2.0 extension, but each time the final cbz file is small and aside from the cover and a few other pages, the pages are all black.

As an example Birds of Prey(1999) #1 is 24 pages and when backed up with the previous version of the extension gives a cbz file of 12.4 MB.
With the 2.0 version I get a 2.12 MB file and the only pages visible are 1(cover), 3 and 4. The other pages are there (the page counter will show "5/24" etc) but are just black.

Not too sure what's happening. Anything I should try?

Is there a way to increase resolution on scans?

The ComiXology web viewer will allow to set zoom level for higher resolutions than the backup extension captures, but I can find no option to scan at higher resolutions. Is there a way to set this?

General issues with comic backups

Outstanding issues:

  • ZIP container downloads instantly fail with a generic connection error.
  • PNG is still broken for me, even as single images with a forced scan.
  • Setting memory to File System sometimes results in a blank HTML page with just a "0%" backup banner, no Comixology content at all.
  • Latency compensation should default to true; I wasn't even able to get 50% complete without it.
  • "Saving..." displays indefinitely, with no files being placed in my Downloads folder.

System:

  • Google Chrome 37.0.2062.120 (Official Build 281580)
  • Comixology Backup 2.0.1
  • Mac OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks

Chrome Extension, permanently disabled

Hello all,

Looks like chrome will no longer allow extensions except those from their store...

Any extensions (like ours) are permanently disabled (greyed out).

Does anyone have any ideas on what we can do about this?

Chrome disables the extension

With newer versions of Chrome, this extension gets disabled since it doesn't come from the Chrome store. Trying to re-enable it does not work. Any ideas on how to get around this?

Support for Right to Left reading (Manga)

I'm hoping in a future version you can add support for Manga that reads right to left. When I try to save a manga, it stalls at 0% and does nothing. I believe this is due to the different way pages advance.

CBZ files will not open

If I download the files as individual images and then zip them myself everything works fine. If I use the cbz or zip settings (compressed or uncompressed) I receive this kind of error in my reader.

image

This error only appears with cbz/zip files created from this extension. On my computer I use 7zip and have no issues.

I am not sure what is causing this issue, my Chrome console gives this error numerous times whenever I try to make one:

Uncaught TypeError: onend is not a function
    at zip.js:772
    at BlobWriter.writeUint8Array (zip.js:283)
    at writeFooter (zip.js:770)
    at onflush (zip.js:309)
    at zip.js:341
    at BlobWriter.writeUint8Array (zip.js:283)
    at Worker.onmessage (zip.js:340)

Comixology not loading comics when plugin is running

Comixology now appears to refuse to open comics (even to read ordinarily) when the backup plugin is running. I've tried to open comics with the plugin disabled, and that has worked; but whenever the plugin is active, Comixology won't load comics.

Crashing

Testing on a dummy file like My Friend Dahmer causes Chrome to crash.

Not working for a comic in Manga Fixed Format

Hi @Cortys

The alert message is

Sorry. The Scan failed.
Maybe you should try again.

Apparently I can't switch into single page view in this particular comic. Maybe this is causing the error?

My chrome version is Version 47.0.2526.8 dev (64-bit). I loaded the extension as unpacked extension. Is any more information I can provide to you? Also, if you can give me some hints how to track down the problem I would gladly try to fix it myself.

no new buttons on my books page

Greetings!

I have installed version 2.0.0 in chrome. I used the unpacked extension method. It shows as enabled on the extensions page.

When I bring up the My Books page there are no new buttons, just the normal read comic button. When I try to read a comic, it asks me if I would like to do a new exploit scan. I click yes, but then the extension will not recognize the click when I click on 1 page view.

After loading the page, if I go back to the extensions page, I see the following:

Here are the view details:

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thanks!

Request Save Button in Settings

With the settings page, I'd like a "Save Settings" button just to have assurance that the changes I make have been applied.

Fails to backup comic

I've just run the comixology bacup on four new books that I bought and three of them worked perfectly, but the third (https://www.comixology.co.uk/Deadpool-Draculas-Gauntlet/digital-comic/150715) consistently fails.

Every time I try it seem to be working, albeit very slowly, and then offers me a download file of something like "a51ee388-7632-4d3b-8384-b7d653d3aec4".

This file then fails to download saying that it can't be found. I've tried renaming the file, but, unsurprisingly, it makes no difference.

Cannot install

I am unable to install the extension using either of the methods provided. Dragging the window installs it, but I am unable to active the extension, Further, closing the browser causes Chrome to deactivate the extension.

Trying the developer method outright fails, generating this error message:
Failed to load extension from: ~PATH (I edited out the path)
Manifest file is missing or unreadable.
Could not load manifest.

Getting download filename wrong

Just recently it's started downloading as some sort of guid with a .zip extension.

The archive is still fine but it's a little annoying having to rename things :)

Fails to backup comic as a cbz file

Hello,

I had this issue about a year ago and am having it again with backing up any comics from comixology.

I've tried reinstalling several times to no avail.

Thank you for the assistance.

Nice work ;)

Just wanted to say nice work. Found your extension and it worked flawlessly, thanks!

Crash while scanning

This actually happens randomly for the most part. When it does I usually just re-queue it and have it try again, however, this one title it seems to be happening consistently.

The title is The Last West #1 and it is free on Comixology.

Store link: https://www.comixology.com/The-Last-West-1/digital-comic/49569

Would you be able to check to see what's happening? Maybe it will show why it crashes randomly elsewhere as well.

For reference:
OS: Ubuntu 16.04
Browser: Chromium 51.0.2704.79
Connection: Multi-gigabit speeds.... It's a VPS server with remote desktop.

Unable to run exploit scan

There are no “Scan” buttons on my books page. I select “Read Comic,” and the program asks me to begin a new scan. From there, it asks me to select Single View; I click but it does not respond. However, it accepts it when I turn the page. It then asks me to select Double Page View, which I click, but again, it doesn’t respond. If I do anything else after that, such as turn the page, the program says that the scan failed and refreshes the page.

Keeps skipping pages and crashing.

The backup script is doing my head in at the moment. As of a couple of weeks ago it was working perfectly, but in the last week it's been skipping a huge number of pages (irrespective of what I set the swap interval and skip delay to), and if it isn't skipping pages it's just crashing completely mid-way with the "Aw Snap" page.

I've tried forcing a new exploit scan, completely reinstalling as well as a fresh install on a totally new computer but nothing I've tried has solved it.
