2022.code4lib.org's Issues

Updated Color Scheme for 2022 Conference Site

We'll need to apply a fresh coat of paint on the site for the Buffalo conference. In previous years, we've used color schemes that have drawn from the professional sports teams of the host city. To get the ball rolling, I've put together a simple palette based upon the Buffalo Sabres hockey team: https://coolors.co/002673-f3d03e-F5F5F5-e8e8e8

I've also quickly updated the assets/_scss/_variables.scss with the above set of colors, which you can preview here: http://code4lib.org/2022.code4lib.org/

By no means do we need to stick to this color scheme, if there's a more appropriate or applicable color references to the Buffalo that we should consider. If we decide to generally stick with this color scheme, we'll need to perform an accessibility audit and open separate issues to resolve any problems.

Create 2022 Skeleton Schedule

Per Kathy Azevedo in Slack:

Can someone get a skeleton schedule posted on the Schedule page? You can use the https://2020.code4lib.org/schedule/ and the following details as a guide. The descriptions under each of the headers listed on the 2020 site, can be reused from for this year’s conference.

  • Monday, May 23 - 9am-5pm - Preconference Workshops (Minor Modification from 2020's description - “Preconference details will be available …”
  • Tuesday, May 24 - 9am - 5:15pm - General Conference, Day One
  • Wednesday, May 25 - 9am - 5:15pm - General Conference, Day Two
  • Thursday, May 26 - 9am - 12:45pm - General Conference, Day Three

Speaker Photo Alt Text Not Sufficiently Descriptive

At the moment, the alt text for any speaker photo only provides the speaker's full name. Alt text for speaker photos would ideally be actual descriptions of the speakers, not just a full name.

From @metageeky

The main goal is that without descriptions of the speakers, a screen reader user does not know about the perceived gender, potential race/ethnicity, etc. of the speakers except by judging names alone. This is a broader diversity issue. Of course, we cannot presume gender or race unless told. There are ways to describe people without saying race or gender explicitly. That's part of the art of alt text.

We'll likely need to:

  1. Add another data point in the speaker objects found in _data/examples/speakers.yml to record the alt text description.
  2. Update _includes/speaker_box.html to pull in the new alt text description from the speaker object, rather than alt="{{ speaker.name }} as it currently does

Prospectus Needs a Few Updates

Per Kathy Azevedo:

  • Add a button between Impact of Support and the Sponsorship Opportunities >> “Sponsor Now” >> Sponsorship Registration Link: https://www.concentra-cms.com/c4l22sponsorreg.html
  • At the Platinum level - please remove the text “At our highest level of… Benefits include:”
  • Is it possible to move the Contributor level down a level? So there are 3 rows of two each.
  • Change “Diversity and Inclusion Sponsorships” heading to “Diversity, Accessibility and Inclusion Sponsorships”.
  • Under Diversity Scholarships - change “including women,” to “including international attendees,”
  • Remove the bullet “5 available” from the Exhibitor Tables.
  • Include the following blurb under the Diversity, Accessibility and Inclusion Sponsorships heading:

To accomplish this, we are re-focusing our previously named “Targeted Sponsors” on Diversity, Accessibility and Inclusion. Each of the sponsorship opportunities listed below, are aimed at providing an inclusive experience for all of our attendees, and can be purchased alone, or added onto a General Sponsorship purchase.

Broken collapse panels on multiple pages

While working on opening keynote voting, I noticed there is an issue happening with keynote-nominees.html. The data is populated, but clicking the speaker names doesn't open the cards. I can see this may have been an issue on previous sites as well (links below).

I think this is also going to be an issue for other pages if we populate them, including proposed-talks, proposed-workshops, and proposed-posters.

We may also want to discuss if we want to continue maintaining these pages, which has come up in past years.

Example links:

Last year's nominees page (same issue): https://2021.code4lib.org/keynote/keynote-nominees.html
2020 Proposed talks page: https://2020.code4lib.org/talks/proposed-talks.html
2020 Proposed workshops page: https://2020.code4lib.org/workshops/proposed-workshops.html

Update 'Welcome' Message

During today's meeting, Jerry proposed a rewrite of the welcome message for the Buffalo conference to include SUNY Buffalo or State University of New York at Buffalo... I don't recall the specifics of the language at the moment.

The welcome message can be found in the main index.html file in the project's root directory.

screenreader review of the speakers & past keynotes pages

This issue is a WIP. For context, I am using macOS VoiceOver with its default settings (e.g. "Navigate webpages by: DOM order"). I am working on resolving these issues on the speaker-a11y branch.

  • Twitter links are confusing because they read as only a (usually unpronounceable) username
  • Are the (ARIA) expanded-collapsed states needed if VO + → reads through bios anyways? (Yes, they're fine)

I need to learn more about how you're expected to navigate web content with VoiceOver to address the second point.

In our last meeting, someone mentioned that links in bios interrupt tabbing through the speakers by name. In my testing, this is the case only when the speaker's bio is expanded, which I think is predictable & desirable behavior. It also speaks to my second bullet point above perhaps not requiring any changes; the expanded state is useful information to know if you will tab into a bio link or not.

I have a draft PR for this now.

Open - Accept Pre-Conference Proposals

Add the pre-conf submission form link: https://forms.gle/bUAahC2KADp2Q4xr9

We are now accepting pre-conference proposals for the 2022 Code4Lib conference in Buffalo, New York. These pre-conferences can either be a 1-day (six hour) or a 1/2-day session (three hour) and will occur on Monday, May 23, 2022.

Code4Lib 2022 is a loosely-structured conference that provides people working at the intersection of libraries/archives/museums/cultural heritage and technology with a chance to share ideas, be inspired, and forge collaborations. For more information about the Code4Lib community, please visit https://code4lib.org/about/.

The pre-conference sessions give folks a space to share and build knowledge, as well as to teach attendees new skills relevant to library technology. Pre-conference sessions can range from workshops to working sessions.

To propose a session, please go to the 2022 submission formhttps://forms.gle/bUAahC2KADp2Q4xr9. If you're looking for inspiration, there are many great examples of pre-conferences from recent years: https://2021.code4lib.org/workshops/, https://2020.code4lib.org/workshops/, https://2019.code4lib.org/workshops/.

We are taking proposals until November 18, 2021, 5 PM PST / 8 PM EST. After a period of public voting on workshops, we hope to confirm sessions with the facilitators shortly after.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us - by responding to this email or by contacting [email protected].

Update Hero Image for 2022

From @yarnetsky in Slack...

Idea for front page image — I'm probably biased as a native Buffalonian, but I think the city flag is super cool. For the front page splash image, I'd love to incorporate the flag's lightning bolts and stars faded in the background behind a photo of Canalside or the Buffalo skyline. The bolts reflects Buffalo's status at the forefront of electricity. In 1896 Nikola Tesla helped make Buffalo the first electrified city in the world.

Opening this issue to begin the discussion around the hero image for 2022. As Jerry has expressed interest in the splash image, I'm assigning this issue to him. If you have a suggestion or an image to use, please share.

How would you like Keynote speaker images and bios?

The Keynote committee has images and bios for the two keynote speakers that will shortly be announced. What's the best way for me to provide a the images and bio? Happy to make a PR, but I didn't see an obvious existing template to update. JUst let me know whatever makes your lives easier.

Sponsorship Updates 2/8

  • Can we move MIT from the Sponsorship Page to the Scholarship page? You can refer to the 2020 Scholarship page to see how our Diversity Scholarship Sponsors were recognized - https://2020.code4lib.org/general-info/scholarships.
  • New Sponsor - Princeton University Library - https://library.princeton.edu/ - Contributor Sponsor - Logo in google drive.
  • Princeton should also be listed on the Scholarship Page. The were a sponsor for 1 Diversity Scholarship in addition to the Contributor Sponsor.

Open call for posters

See the email to the listserv from this morning.

Proposals can be submitted through Friday, February 21, 2022 at 11:59pm PST (GMT−8). Voting (if needed) will start on March 7, 2022 and continue through March 18, 2022. The URL to submit votes will be announced on the Code4Lib mailing list. The final list of posters will be announced at the end of March.
Submit your poster proposal! https://forms.gle/ELyF1dx6U3FnvZoU7

Update Venue Information (Awaiting Planning Committee)

There are two possible locations for the May conference: North Campus and Downtown. A final decision on the location for the Buffalo conference has not yet been reached.

Once we have a definitive location, we'll need to populate the venue information in data/conf.yml

Mention Ruby/Dev Minimum Requirements in README

If our site requires a minimum version of Ruby, we should mention that in the README.md file.

From Slack:

Probably mention needing Ruby 2.6 at least. Jekyll doesn't work with Ruby 3 either.

In fact, at least 2.6.3 per this site saying "Ruby 2.6.3 includes a version of RubyGems that’s less strict, so upgrading Ruby will automatically upgrade RubyGems and should fix the issue too."

Close - Poster Session Submissions

Proposals can be submitted through February 21, 2022, at 11:59pm Pacific time.

Let's test the new auto-merge scheduler with this one.

Inconsistent Application of the 'online-only-conference' Boolean

To control site elements that typically differ between an in-person conference and a fully-online conference, preference should be given to the global online-only-conference boolean in conf.yml to control the display/removal/replacement of site content.

PR Forthcoming...

Open - Accept Conference Proposals for Prepared Talks

We'll need to enable conference submissions on the site.

Submission Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc3WHM4INwlzBmpRXwJQTKls0yIr0Vafk2EVhfu5H_o0-aAgw/viewform

Per Code4Lib Slack:

Code4Lib 2022 is soliciting proposals for prepared talks!

The conference will be held at the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, NY, from Monday, May 23, 2022, to Thursday, May 26, 2022. Remote attendance and remote presentations will be supported. More information about Code4lib 2022 is available on this year’s conference website.

We encourage all members of the library, archives, museums, cultural heritage organizations, and technology community to submit proposals for prepared talks. Prepared talks should focus on one or more of the following areas:
Projects you've worked on which incorporate innovative implementation of existing technologies and/or development of new software

Tools and technologies – How to get the most out of existing tools, standards, and protocols (and ideas on how to make them better)

Technical issues – Big issues in library technology that are worthy of community attention or development
Relevant non-technical issues – Concerns of interest to the Code4Lib community which are not strictly technical in nature, e.g. collaboration, diversity, organizational challenges, etc.

We will be soliciting 10, 15, and 20 minute talks. You'll be asked to indicate which talk lengths you would be willing to accommodate for your proposal. A separate call for poster proposals will be offered at a later date. There will also be sign-up opportunities to present 5-minute lightning talks at the event.

Submit a presentation proposal for Code4Lib 2022

As in past years, the Code4Lib community will vote on proposals that they would like to see included in the program. In order to provide increased opportunities for a diversity of speakers and topics, all presentations will be listed by title, institution, and description only during the voting period. Speaker names will not be included until the program is posted. (edited)

Conf.yml: "I could use a sprucing up, couldn't I?"

...I'm not seeing an answer about something I'm seeing in our conf.yml file — does it matter if we use three quote methods in the same file? (no, single, and double quotes on strings without escape characters

We may want to step back and clean-up our main conf.yml file. As a newcomer, I found the comments and sections helpful... but I think we could reorganize/tidy up the additions that have been made over the years into a better cohesive unit.

It may be easier to do this level of revision after issue #8 is complete, as the use of string method could be bound to logic in an included file.

Discuss Enhancements to Prospectus Page

Concentra folks shared the following ideas for improvements to our Prospectus page.

  1. Could we add icons to the DAI Sponsors similar to those in the General Sponsor levels?
  2. Could we add a comparison chart showing the benefits in a quick view format? Similar to the image below

image

How difficult would it be to make these updates? What changes to the site would be involved? How much administrative overhead would be adding for future site maintainers? General thoughts?

We do not need to take any action, but I wanted to open up a space for discussion.

stale "about Code4Lib" page

The whole Conference Information section on the General Info > About C4L /general-info/about-c4l page is pretty stale; we haven't done conference reports since 2012. The only other content of that section is a link back...to the page you're on. I think we should:

  • delete the whole Conf Info section
  • link back to code4lib.org somewhere
  • link to the last few conference websites

Thoughts? It's an easy edit and I'm happy to do it if we all agree.

Schedule and Auto-Merge Open/Close PRs

Reading through the chat transcript from today's meeting
To schedule and auto-merge the toggling to open/close events, shall we install and try PR Scheduler on this repo?

Using the Merge Schedule action is quite simple and can be added to this repo without any difficulty.

For example, to schedule the close of the following issues:
#16
#17

We'll need to:

  • Add the .github/workflow directory to the repo
  • Set a daily cron task to merge scheduled PRs using a .yml file
  • Add documentation to the site Wiki about how to schedule PR merges

Anything else?

Upcoming conference's sponsorship form is not yet available

Reference PR #9

When the upcoming conference's sponsorship form is not yet available, the prospectus page should not display any links, buttons, or make reference to the sponsorship form. However, the sponsorship contact email should continue to be displayed to accept and respond to any early inquires of support for the conference.

There are several ways we could handle this issue. And I'm certain that ya'll will have better solutions to propose than I do.

I think it'd be better to comment out last year's form URL in the config data and then use if-else logic in the template to show only the email if we don't have a form URL.

@phette23 will take the lead on this issue.

Add 3 more sponsors

See Slack conversation from today.

VALE - https://vale.njedge.net/ - Supporter Sponsor - logo in google drive
MIT Libraries - https://libraries.mit.edu/ - Diversity Scholarship (x2) - logo in google drive (the benefit reads that they will be featured on the Scholarship page, but I know in previous years they’ve been added to the main Sponsor Page. I think we should continue this. At the Silver Level - their contribution was $3,000)
One More!! ArchivesSpace - https://archivesspace.org/ - Supporter Sponsor - Logo in the google drive

Header says we're an online conference after the date

Shall we pull the word "Online" in the header and leave just the date as was prior practice (2020 and before)?

If we're going to be hybrid then "live and online" might be worth noting, but otherwise saying online might mislead.

2 new sponsors, annotation for MIT

See Slack conversation from today.

Can we add a note under MIT Library’s logo “Diversity Scholarships” - similar to Captioning Sponsor under balsamiq.
LYRASIS - https://www.lyrasis.org/ - Captioning Sponsor - Logo in Google Drive
METRO - https://metro.org/ - Supporter Sponsor - Logo in drive

As I said in Slack, I added MIT with a diversity: true property so we should probably add logic on the sponsors page to trigger off of that, adding "Diversity Scholarships" text in the same place we put annotations.
