terraform-aws-vpn-connection's Introduction

Project Banner

Latest ReleaseLast UpdatedSlack Community

Terraform module to provision a site-to-site VPN connection between a VPC and an on-premises network.

The module does the following:

  • Creates a Virtual Private Gateway (VPG) and attaches it to the VPC
  • Creates a Customer Gateway (CGW) pointing to the provided IP address of the Internet-routable external interface on the on-premises network
  • Creates a Site-to-Site Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection and assigns it to the VPG and CGW
  • Requests automatic route propagation between the VPG and the provided route tables in the VPC
  • If the VPN connection is configured to use static routes, provisions a static route between the VPN connection and the CGW

Tip

๐Ÿ‘ฝ Use Atmos with Terraform

Cloud Posse uses atmos to easily orchestrate multiple environments using Terraform.
Works with Github Actions, Atlantis, or Spacelift.

Watch demo of using Atmos with Terraform
Example of running atmos to manage infrastructure from our Quick Start tutorial.

Usage

  module "vpn_connection" {
    source = "cloudposse/vpn-connection/aws"
    # Cloud Posse recommends pinning every module to a specific version
    # version = "x.x.x"
    namespace                                 = "eg"
    stage                                     = "dev"
    name                                      = "test"
    vpc_id                                    = "vpc-xxxxxxxx"
    vpn_gateway_amazon_side_asn               = 64512
    customer_gateway_bgp_asn                  = 65000
    customer_gateway_ip_address               = "172.0.0.1"
    route_table_ids                           = ["rtb-xxxxxxxx", "rtb-yyyyyyyy", "rtb-zzzzzzzz"]
    vpn_connection_static_routes_only         = "true"
    vpn_connection_static_routes_destinations = ["10.80.1.0/24"]
  }

Important

In Cloud Posse's examples, we avoid pinning modules to specific versions to prevent discrepancies between the documentation and the latest released versions. However, for your own projects, we strongly advise pinning each module to the exact version you're using. This practice ensures the stability of your infrastructure. Additionally, we recommend implementing a systematic approach for updating versions to avoid unexpected changes.

Inputs

Name Description Type Default Required
additional_tag_map Additional key-value pairs to add to each map in tags_as_list_of_maps. Not added to tags or id.
This is for some rare cases where resources want additional configuration of tags
and therefore take a list of maps with tag key, value, and additional configuration.
map(string) {} no
attributes ID element. Additional attributes (e.g. workers or cluster) to add to id,
in the order they appear in the list. New attributes are appended to the
end of the list. The elements of the list are joined by the delimiter
and treated as a single ID element.
list(string) [] no
context Single object for setting entire context at once.
See description of individual variables for details.
Leave string and numeric variables as null to use default value.
Individual variable settings (non-null) override settings in context object,
except for attributes, tags, and additional_tag_map, which are merged.
any

delimiter Delimiter to be used between ID elements.
Defaults to - (hyphen). Set to "" to use no delimiter at all.
string null no
descriptor_formats Describe additional descriptors to be output in the descriptors output map.
Map of maps. Keys are names of descriptors. Values are maps of the form
{<br> format = string<br> labels = list(string)<br>}
(Type is any so the map values can later be enhanced to provide additional options.)
format is a Terraform format string to be passed to the format() function.
labels is a list of labels, in order, to pass to format() function.
Label values will be normalized before being passed to format() so they will be
identical to how they appear in id.
Default is {} (descriptors output will be empty).
any {} no
enabled Set to false to prevent the module from creating any resources bool null no
environment ID element. Usually used for region e.g. 'uw2', 'us-west-2', OR role 'prod', 'staging', 'dev', 'UAT' string null no
existing_transit_gateway_id Existing Transit Gateway ID. If provided, the module will not create a Virtual Private Gateway but instead will use the transit_gateway. For setting up transit gateway we can use the cloudposse/transit-gateway/aws module and pass the output transit_gateway_id to this variable. string "" no
id_length_limit Limit id to this many characters (minimum 6).
Set to 0 for unlimited length.
Set to null for keep the existing setting, which defaults to 0.
Does not affect id_full.
number null no
label_key_case Controls the letter case of the tags keys (label names) for tags generated by this module.
Does not affect keys of tags passed in via the tags input.
Possible values: lower, title, upper.
Default value: title.
string null no
label_order The order in which the labels (ID elements) appear in the id.
Defaults to ["namespace", "environment", "stage", "name", "attributes"].
You can omit any of the 6 labels ("tenant" is the 6th), but at least one must be present.
list(string) null no
label_value_case Controls the letter case of ID elements (labels) as included in id,
set as tag values, and output by this module individually.
Does not affect values of tags passed in via the tags input.
Possible values: lower, title, upper and none (no transformation).
Set this to title and set delimiter to "" to yield Pascal Case IDs.
Default value: lower.
string null no
labels_as_tags Set of labels (ID elements) to include as tags in the tags output.
Default is to include all labels.
Tags with empty values will not be included in the tags output.
Set to [] to suppress all generated tags.
Notes:
The value of the name tag, if included, will be the id, not the name.
Unlike other null-label inputs, the initial setting of labels_as_tags cannot be
changed in later chained modules. Attempts to change it will be silently ignored.
set(string)
[
"default"
]
no
name ID element. Usually the component or solution name, e.g. 'app' or 'jenkins'.
This is the only ID element not also included as a tag.
The "name" tag is set to the full id string. There is no tag with the value of the name input.
string null no
namespace ID element. Usually an abbreviation of your organization name, e.g. 'eg' or 'cp', to help ensure generated IDs are globally unique string null no
regex_replace_chars Terraform regular expression (regex) string.
Characters matching the regex will be removed from the ID elements.
If not set, "/[^a-zA-Z0-9-]/" is used to remove all characters other than hyphens, letters and digits.
string null no
route_table_ids The IDs of the route tables for which routes from the Virtual Private Gateway will be propagated list(string) [] no
stage ID element. Usually used to indicate role, e.g. 'prod', 'staging', 'source', 'build', 'test', 'deploy', 'release' string null no
tags Additional tags (e.g. {'BusinessUnit': 'XYZ'}).
Neither the tag keys nor the tag values will be modified by this module.

terraform-aws-vpn-connection's Issues

Error on plan execution

Describe the Bug

On plan execution:

โ”‚ Error: Output refers to sensitive values
โ”‚
โ”‚ on outputs.tf line 16:
โ”‚ 16: output "vpn_connection_customer_gateway_configuration" {
โ”‚
โ”‚ To reduce the risk of accidentally exporting sensitive data that was
โ”‚ intended to be only internal, Terraform requires that any root module
โ”‚ output containing sensitive data be explicitly marked as sensitive, to
โ”‚ confirm your intent.
โ”‚
โ”‚ If you do intend to export this data, annotate the output value as
โ”‚ sensitive by adding the following argument:
โ”‚ sensitive = true

Expected Behavior

Expected:

Plan: 5 to add, 0 to change, 0 to destroy.

Changes to Outputs:

Action Required: Fix Renovate Configuration

There is an error with this repository's Renovate configuration that needs to be fixed. As a precaution, Renovate will stop PRs until it is resolved.

Error type: Cannot find preset's package (github>whitesource/merge-confidence:beta)

Can't use this module 2 times for different VPN on 1 VPC

Describe the Bug

When using this module for 2d VPN connection on the VPC in my AWS infra I'm getting errors due to the new VPN Gateway trying to be created.

Error: error attaching EC2 VPN Gateway (vgw-***) to VPC (vpc-***): InvalidVpcState: VPC vpc-*** is currently attached to the Virtual Private Gateway.

Expected Behavior

It seems logical for me to be able to configure VPG that is used instead of creating a new one (especially when official VPC module has enable_vpn_gateway feature).

Steps to Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behaviour:

  1. Run module for 1 VPN
  2. Run module with different parameters for 2 VPN, but reuse VPC id

Add support for lifecycle control

Describe the Feature

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/vpn/latest/s2svpn/tunnel-endpoint-lifecycle.html

Tunnel endpoint lifecycle control provides control over the schedule of endpoint replacements, and can help minimize connectivity disruptions during AWS managed tunnel endpoint replacements.

Expected Behavior

I expect to be able to configure tunnel endpoint lifecycle control.

Use Case

It is required to control the VPN endpoint maintenance schedule in situations where you can't configure double tunnels.

Describe Ideal Solution

This feature is already supported by the provider, just support required arguments in the module.

Add transit_gateway_id support to the module to allows multiple VPCs via single site-to-site vpn

Slack Community

Describe the Feature

Allow passing in the transit_gateway_id to the module so that we can allow traffic to and through multiple VPCs with single site-to-site vpn.

Expected Behavior

Allow traffic to flow through to multiple VPCs without the need to setup multiple site-to-site vpns for each vpc because every vpn gateway only is attached to single vpc.

Use Case

Currently we cannot setup a VPN with transit gateway id, we can only setup with vpn virtual private gateway which is only attached to one 1 VPC. If we allow transit_gateway_id to be set then we can allow traffic to multiple vpcs via site-to-site vpn because its possible to attach multiple vpcs to single transit gateway.

Describe Ideal Solution

We can allow passing in just transit_gateway_id and let user setup transit-gateway outside of the module using the https://github.com/cloudposse/terraform-aws-transit-gateway

Alternatives Considered

Explain what alternative solutions or features you've considered.

Additional Context

In the resource "aws_vpn_connection"
transit_gateway_id - (Optional) The ID of the EC2 Transit Gateway.

Using defaults results in circular modifications in-place

Describe the Bug

When creating a VPN using the aws_vpn_connection resource, lots of defaults for the VPN are set up which is desired. When you come to plan/apply you get in-place changes where the default values are to be taken out and replaced with nothing. This leads to the VPN being modified and the tunnels going down during the process despite nothing actually happening.

Expected Behavior

You don't modify in place or anything when the modification is to remove the default values so that you can use the default values.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Create a resource
resource "aws_vpn_connection" "main" {
    count                       = var.enable_vpn ? 1 : 0
    vpn_gateway_id              = aws_vpn_gateway.vpn_gateway[0].id
    customer_gateway_id         = aws_customer_gateway.customer_gateway[0].id
    type                        = "ipsec.1"
    static_routes_only          = true

    tags = {
        Name = "${var.customer_name}-VPN"
    }
}
  1. Apply the VPN - and then later apply again
# aws_vpn_connection.main[0] will be updated in-place
  ~ resource "aws_vpn_connection" "main" {
        id                                   = "vpn-0c6ec0afe0bd1debb"

Allow for adding routes to AWS route tables for accessing on-prem systems

Describe the Feature

It seems this feature is not yet supported. In my experiments the route-propagation setting is enabled, but routes to internal (on-prem) CIDRs are not added to my AWS route tables.

Expected Behavior

I'd expect my AWS route tables to be augmented with routes to my on-prem CIDRs via the virtual private gateway.

Use Case

This has been proven to be necessary for our platform.

Describe Ideal Solution

I'd expect my AWS route tables to be augmented with routes to my on-prem CIDRs via the virtual private gateway.
