This will be most useful/easy to look at for non-overlapping ranges (e.g. subspecies of a single species). Ranges for different birds should be colored and identified e.g. by a legend or hover-over text.

Allow users to enter a text description of a location/region and view the list of birds occurring in that region.

Allow user to specify a polygon (e.g. drag a rectangle) and view the list of birds occurring inside it.
