timeline images rotated?

I have no idea why the two images of the sousa trophy (1927) and the sudler trophy (1996) are being rotated. When I view the image by itself, it seems fine, so I kinda wonder if it's related somehow to the lightbox code? I have no idea.

Audio Section

Do we want to have one? It seems like it would make sense, given the type of content we have, unless if we will include them only in the story sections.

links on image galleries do not appear like links

for some reason, they only turn red or hover maroon after they have been clicked, but otherwise don't look like links from the beginning or on hover.

image

clicked on left, not yet clicked on right

not really sure where this behavior would be coming from as there is fairly minimal styling being applied to that page?

Design footage page filters and video view

Currently functional but not pretty.

Would be best if the modal was already large enough to accommodate the video when first opened, rather than the video running over the side when played.

Buttons should likely be resized or reorganized in some way, possibly alphabetized or ordered by number?

marches story audio metadata

Right now audio preload is set to none which means 0:00 for the time. When I tried setting it to metadata in firefox, it was still loading the entire file in the network tab....need to figure out what's going on with that, but probably not critical for launch

Check off all sections

Do these look okay for launch? GREAT! Once they're checked off here, they gotta be changed via branch to make sure it doesn't mess things up on master.

Timeline questions for Falcone

Does he have any newspaper press about Sudler Trophy? Are there any photos that I could use in the timeline of it?

Was the Johnny Carson tribute in 2006 or 2007?

download all assets locally

right now using cdn for bootstrap and css but I would like to download anything locally that I can to avoid the site crashing and burning in the future if a cdn stops being offered

timeline behavior UI

Currently I have a lightbox so that a person can page through all the images on the timeline very easily, however, this maybe confusing since there is a "more info" button below the image which is unrelated....the image will only give citation information, the more info gives a lot more info about the event itself. What would be the best user experience for this? A lightbox that isn't a gallery? Clicking the image expands the dropdown? A link specifically to view a larger image and citation?

choose several images that could be used for home page

On Parade Finish Section

Need to scan the On Parade record to put on the website if possible, failing that record whatever available metadata in a nicer format on the website. Ask Karin about styling recommendations

Categorization of "cheerleaders"

Not sure how to describe all cheerleaders, since I know that they may be Tassels or Corncobs or spirit squad or.....etc. Will need archivist help, probably? But for launch, simply describe as "cheerleaders"

Photo Section

Much like the #5 audio section, do we want to have a browsable / filterable view of photos as we do of the footage?

Overall website design

Falcone had the idea of having "old" looking header of the website (maybe old image, sepia drumhead, etc) and then the footer is modern.

I am thinking that maybe if we have a color neutral header (old / black and white / sepia) that wouldn't conflict with a standard set of website colors (black / grey / red / cream / whatever), then we can mostly use images to make the website pop. There are loads and loads of modern band photos we could use, and lots of old military and band day photos, etc, which we could use for a "splash" page and SPARC style home page navigation.

add Blake's footage and get metadata

someone donated 2 personally taken clips of the band for the collection and I can add it to the site if I get the deets

may not require cutting snippets this time around, but will require generating a thumbnail, etc

Divide "People" images

Consider the following:

On the Field and In the Stands
Individuals and Uniforms
Rehearsals and More

could entirely replace the people section, which I think would make more sense to be honest, it's kind of a hodgepodge at the moment

add digitization acknowledgements to each clip?

With the addition of Blake's new donor's films, there will be multiple sources of funding for digitization beyond Kay Walter / CDRH and Gary and so perhaps I should attach acknowledgements to each of these for clarity's sake

Add new timeline elements

There are a lot more events which can be added to the current timeline in a basic way and filled out later

Footage Commentary

What kind of text do we want to put on the main footage page? Should there actually be another link with more information about it somewhere? An about page? Or another multimedia page?

Help and advice for UI/UX

  • navigation links
    I was originally picturing these like SPARC with the expanding images and overlaid text, but I don't know if there are too many throughout the site for this on the band page?

  • timeline functionality in terms of what images do, dropdowns, lightboxes, etc

  • how to make interviews look a little more elegant (links at the top to subject, speaker distinguishing, etc)

  • small cleanup for stories/marches just because I think it could look a little slicker

  • multimedia/audio/on-parade cleanup just a little as well, it's pretty crude looking

  • entire image gallery everything (I just started working on this) from nav to lightbox vs modal like on footage, etc (comment below)

  • how to condense the scss variables into one place, presumably I can require or include them or something?

Make nav image zoom in on hover

I didn't figure out how to do this quickly

the code (borrowed from sparc) will be something like this

.section-nav-image {
 background-position:center;
 background-size:800px 600px;
 display:block;
 margin-left:-15px;
 margin-right:-15px;
 overflow:hidden;
 padding:0
}
.section-nav:focus .section-nav-image,
.section-nav:hover .section-nav-image {
 background-position:center;
 background-size:960px 720px;
 transition:all 0.5s;
 -webkit-transition:all 0.5s;
 -o-transition:all 0.5s;
 -moz-transition:all 0.5s
}

create documents pages for all the stuff that I did as undergrad

it's already transcribed and even if I can't find the original images in archives, the ones on omeka are actually pretty reasonable sizes generally

will need to think about where these will go in the website, however

they may not be good fits for images/documents anymore, because they have transcriptions and are much more complex

maybe stories/documents/* ? they aren't really stories either because I'm not offering analysis, although I suppose I can contextualize them if I have time

Standardize Citations

Go through all the timeline events and use the citation system that I ultimately ended up with, match it up with all the early ones

documentation for scripts and regeneration process

gotta leave myself notes, but more importantly other people notes!

also put in a code comment at the top of the layout so that anybody trying to edit a generated HTML file should hopefully be aware that's what they are doing

rose johnson interview video style

video is 960x540

not sure if we want that whole thing to display at the beginning, or if it should always be on the side / top as a person is scrolling, etc? Probably it shouldn't be as itty bitty as it first appears when the page is loaded, however, in order to call more attention to it. We may also want a warning about the size, potentially?

check all footage

check all the footage for description typos and to make sure it plays!

add snider slides without metadata to spreadsheet with basic description

not sure if I want to add them to the actual snider spreadsheet, since that's a direct copy of the archives spreadsheet, or to a second one, but either way I have collection / RG / rights information on them even if they are lacking official documentation in archives, so I might as well include it!

Fill out existing timeline

Put the rest of the facebook timeline content into the website with citations, and then hunt down images that we can use for these.

scan entire band manual from 1930s

I scanned a few pages of Charles ledwith manual when I was an undergrad but it should be in the school of music and I don't see why I couldn't check it out and scan every page to include. Probably wouldn't worry about transcribing it for the launch. would be fun to compare against a modern band manual!

"webify" images

Currently I've been using graphicsmagick to make preview images (300x300) and larger images (800x800) but some of those files are still fairly large. Is there a script or utility that can run through the jpgs to try to help out the size?

Would be interested in recommendations from @karindalziel
