community-cookbook's Issues

What institutional/organizational support structures catalyze the impact of your community?

What are the organizational support structures that make it easy for you to build your local community or personal skills?

Maybe it is:

  • A research institute
  • University center
  • The library
  • A particular lab group's culture
  • Some available workshops/resources

In short, what is it about the places where you work (or have worked) that helps you grow and develop your skills?

The feedback here will be curated and fed to this chapter:

Share failures

From Wirawan

Similarly, stories of failures or challenges are rarely published. If we can carefully present them (without shaming the failing parties), they can provide useful lessons for other people.

Include community feedback about techniques

From: Wirawan

It might be helpful to include some user contribution of experiences with some of these approach. What works, what kind of community are they serving? In this way, other people can see what might likely work for their particular community.

Workshop retention

Some retention strategies for ResBaz type events from eResearch NZ 2019 discussions:

  • start with a group activity
  • Join people to whanau (family) groups (i.e. assign people to groups by colour or animal)
  • Pair people up or small groups
  • use posters and encourage poster interactions with sticky notes (like Sydney ResBaz)

Gathering Local Community Websites

Based on the Champions call blog post list of Carpentry Community websites, this is a place to collect other community websites that should be included in the next update of the community-cookbook.

The current list is:

Please add yours if I missed it, or you know about another one by commenting on this issue with the link.

How did you get your Carpentries or coding community of practice started?

Please share your initiation story about how you helped build and grow a community of practice.

# The Beginning
How did you get started?

# Successes
What were your victories?

# Challenges
What challenges and stumbling blocks did you run into?

Please share using the above Markdown headings and we'll curate this into a chapter on what it takes to initiate a community of practice.

This feedback will be used to feed the chapter on initiating local communities:
