beta.carpentries.org's Issues

Update Statistics included on home page

I am adding this issue to follow-up on our meeting conversation about the statistics included on the home page. We were okay with the number of workshops and countries but discussed issues with estimating learners. In conclusion we decided to update the stats as follows:

  • Volunteers (Badged) [at some point we will need to decide active or not but for now we will go with all badges persons]
  • Workshops (Cumulative)
  • Countries

Update Home Page, Stats & other parts

Hey Maneesha,

Here are updates for the home page sections in order from top to bottom.

  • No change to top two sections

parts/statistics.html

  • Our diverse and global community is comprised of (No Change)
  • More Than X Volunteers (can you pull the sum of all badged (instructors, maintainers, etc.? no need to differentiate active folks at this time.)
  • About X Members (can you pull the current active memberships in AMY for variants Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Affiliate?)
  • More than X Countries (No Change)
  • Join our community (Can you link this to the Get Involved page?)

parts/fifty_fifty_left.html

  • Our volunteer-led workshops are small, hands on, and interactive. (No Change)
  • Find a workshop (Can you update the button text, and link to Upcoming Workshops?)

parts/testimonials.html

  • No Change for now, still gathering testimonials.

parts/fifty_fifty_right.html

  • Subscribe to our newsletter (No Change)
  • Get a roundup of events, updates, and tips twice a month. (No Change)
  • Subscribe to Newsletter (Can you update the button text? and link to Newsletter Form

parts/supporters.html

  • Our supporters (No Change)
  • We are supported by our member organisations, those who sponsor workshops, as well as grants and donations from various sources. (No Change)
  • Update Logos to show only:
    • Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation
    • Alfred P Sloan Foundation
    • Chan Zuckerberg Initaitive
    • Posit (R Studio's new name and logo)
  • Become a sponsor (Can you update the button text? and link to the sponsorship page?)

As a side note, I do have some of these logo files. Would you like me to add them to a specific folder on this repo?

create page for community members

The data feed is available to use by the site but there is no page layout to use it.

This page wasn't included in the designs. Do we want to keep it? If so, a layout needs to be designed for it. There are potentially elements that are available to use for it.

Update site variables in config.yml

We have websites, email addresses, etc. that we use throughout the website. To keep this data easy to maintain, these should all be defined by calling on variables defined in config.yml

Update sponsor logos

Our sponsor list, as it appears on the front page, is built from this yml data, with logos in this folder.

@Talishask has logos for our sponsors. We have all current sponsor logos except for Posit. Talisha, can you put in a PR that puts the Posit logo in that folder and edits the line in the yml file to be just the main part of the image file name (without the extension)?

Also, if we want people to be able to click through from the logo on our website to the sponsor's website, can you update the URL fields in the yml file?

re-organize files and folders

Right now, all files and folders live at root. This means we have index.html and folders like workshops etc. all at root. We should have these live in a folder called pages -- otherwise the repo contents are going to get very messy very fast.

inconsistencies with "selected" menu option

The css for the "selected" menu option is inconsistently applied and not working.

For example, on the workshops page (layout code and rendered page), the "Workshops" menu item has the active css style applied. Nothing changes when you click on the "Host workshop" menu option.

On the about us page (layout code and rendered page), no menu items have the active css style applied, and nothing changes as you click through various options.
