higfxback's Issues

which version of mesa does higfxback require?

Great overview about kinds of linux gfx methods!

I'm trying to compile mesa following your slides but there seems no fbdev platform support for the latest mesa, so which version can i use?

Video Graphics Library (vgl) - Backend for FreeBSD

Hi there,

Your project seems really interesting and is as close to a "digital preservation" Linux distro as I have found so far.

Not quite Linux but FreeBSD has semi-recently moved to kernel modesetting and as such replaced its old syscons (sc) console driver with newcons (vt). In doing so they had to remove support for VGL.

https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?vgl

As you can see by the API documented in this manpage, vgl isn't very large. Does your project have any interest in perhaps creating a compatibility wrapper around this? There are relatively few graphics backends for UNIX-like and as far as I have seen, vgl is fairly nice.

This isn't an "issue" as such, it might just be something cool to consider if it is of interest to you.

Any available source or instructions?

There is a lot of useful information here, but there is no source code or a description on how it was done.

It is a really impressive archive of examples, but that knowledge will be lost if you abandon this project for any reason.

Would you mind to share that source? Or at least the knowledge on how to do it?

It could be anything, just to allow someone else to replicate the experiment.

As an example, I'm thinking of something like this: https://github.com/nyorain/kms-vulkan

That's a fork of another KMS example with a small extra to add Vulkan support. It's not usable out-of-box, but it gives a really good starting point. I would love to se that with your repo as well.
