In my case, I'm using AXHTMLParser from Swift, so the string input is actually a Swift String. [string fastestEncoding] will then happily return NSUnicodeStringEncoding, which will throw errors on every call to htmlParseChunk, because it can't handle the \0 bytes. After all, the context is created with XML_CHAR_ENCODING_UTF8. I have not looked into libxml2.

All that happens in a Swift project, in the Simulator (iPhone 5s 10.3.1).

to prevent crashes

The library is awkward to use from Swift, because there are no nonnull guarantees.
I patched it thus, to make it easier to use: patch.txt
