There was no toolbar button to add to the toolbar.

Normally the autoarchive button should be added to the toolbar automatically. If it is not added to the toolbar it should be at least available when you customize the toolbar.
So you mean, it is not in the toolbar and it is also not available to be added to the toolbar?

The auto-run setting (at each start of thunderbird) has no effect.

As you can see the setting, the addon is at least installed at all.
Can you enable the logging option and restart Thunderbird.
Then open the console (Extras\developer tools\error console). There you should find logging entries from the addon. If automatic archiving at startup is enabled it should also log something about this.

Can you post the logs here? (You might want to clean it from personal information before)

Correct. All I see is the usual "Archive" Button that archives selected messages. This one:

Clicking it does not change the console output filtered for 'auto', so I guess this is not AAR's button.

XPunge and Remove Duplicate Messages (Alternate) have entries -- maybe Mozilla opened their API again after too many complaints?

Ahh_ It does run.

Possibly the ignore account '<local folders>' (2nd last line) indicates the culprit. I have all my accounts collected via settings and filters into local folders (and a tree of their subfolders), and AAR just skips them all.

XPunge and Remove Duplicate Messages (Alternate) are no MailExtensions. They are legacy addons that use legacy interfaces and will probably not work in this form in future of Thunderbird, see https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/tb-planning/-E8Yw6POxEE

Ah, thanks for the explanation. I was not aware that the legacy API was still working.

I've opened #40 because this was a point I could pin down exactly, not cluttered with an general 'doesn't work' on several observations. I can live without a toolbar button, so I'll close #38 and will wait for the next release.

Just to be sure:

• you can open the settings of the addon (which means it is installed at all)
• you do not see the autoarchive button in the toolbar (default would be at the very right side)
• you do not see the autoarchive button in the main menu bar (the one at the top, it may be unvisible and can be made visible if you press the right mouse button at the toolbar)
• you do not see the autoarchive button under customize toolbar
• you also do not see it after pressing "reset to default" in the customize toolbar dialog?

Hello, I am running Ubuntu 19.10 and Thunderbird 68.2.2. Addon is installed, I can open addon settings, I can customize acconts and save changes, but I have no autoarchive icon in toolbar, and no option in Tools available menu. But I have a button "Automatic Archiving" appearing next to the menu button (hamburger) and from it I can launch archive and it seems to work like this (in progress). Nothing wrong in console log afaics.

The "Pole Emploi" folder is archived (25 emails actually), and then that error (in autosync.jsm:251:30 module).

After a restart, I got a bit more archiving, and some interesting messages, like this one :

Then it continues archiving, then the same error, and all that 4 times, then the "uncaught exception" in autosync.jsm.
Does that mean my index is somewhere corrupted ? Is there a way to correct this ?

If you have the button near the hamburger menu, that's the expected behavior. Additionally you should be able to customize it (move it to another location via customizing toolbar).

The gloda.index is the search index. If it is broken, the search results may not be appropriate. Unfortunately Thunderbird has a problem with this, when moving multiple messages. See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=989884 (You might comment on this bug to increase the pressure :) )
You can rebuilt the index via https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database

Thank you for your answer. I deleted global index, restarted TH, and restarted archiving. It goes a bit further, then stop again on a folder with messages to archive. Process usage is at 0%.
I kill TH, restart, relaunch archive, it stops again to the same folder, sometimes with a different number of emails to archive.
Then I deleted index again, et restart the loop... I got again some globa_index msg ERROR, but doing that way I did some progress, little by little, and now archiving is complete.
A bit tough operation !
I commented the bug, but it is a very old one, not sure I put "pressure" anywhere ! :-D
