Calling the following will not change all of the cells that are currently showing to the new display style.

- (void)registerClassForDisplay:(Class)displayClass;

This is most likely because there are still cells in the reuse queue so it's pulling out an old cell that does not match the current displayClass.

It would be nice if I could hide the entire list of notifications or show them from a button or something.

There should be a way to just dismiss a cell without generating the same callback that the user tapped on a cell and wants to activate it.

With a large list of cells, if seems if you scroll the list off in either direction, cells will come back without any appearance (you can see the openings of where they should be). They are still tappable and generate the correct delegate feedback, but just are not present.
