can't use ActionController::Live

Hello,
after adding this gem, I can't use ActionController::Live any more:

byebug in controller, without backport_new_renderer:

(byebug) response.class
ActionController::Live::Response

byebug in controller, with backport_new_renderer:

(byebug) response.class
ActionDispatch::Response

both controllers include ActionController::Live
any idea how to fix this?

Not working for Rails < 4

Because of this method is not available: http://apidock.com/rails/Hash/transform_keys!

ActionView::Template::Error: undefined method `generate_key'

For some reason I get this error when rendering a partial from the Rails console:

ActionView::Template::Error: undefined method `generate_key' for nil:NilClass
