would it be helpful if I came to Osney at some point this week (tomorrow am or Weds am or Thurs am) to try and get the display as good as we can for now? I'll be on leave 24-28 July.

I'm around tomorrow morning after 10 if you wanted to come by.

Re: divs and spans with locus. It seems that there is inconsistency with how this is applied in the TEI. For example, in ChCh 87, having an inline (span) locus would be strange, as it's used for the "title" of every nested section.

http://black01-qa.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/catalog/manuscript_3961

In Lat. th. d 31, locus also serves as the 'title' of a nestedmsItem, but it's in parentheses.

Without some sort of title for nested msItems, there's a danger that it will get lost in the text. If locus is to be used as such I would suggest keeping it as a block-level element.

@holfordm: Are any of the issues here that haven't been marked as fixed still relevant?

still live:

  • refine rules for inserting ';' before or after origPlace [see e.g. http:/medieval-qa.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/catalog/manuscript_1591 part 4]; problems with multiple origPlace generating multiple ';;' only first or last should generate it?
  • multiple authors should be separated by '&' not ';' [http://medieval-qa.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/catalog/manuscript_1591] (part 5 item 3)
  • conversion generates ' ' after punctuation in some contexts [http://medieval-qa.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/catalog/manuscript_1591, passim, e.g after authors]
  • can we clarify / refine the rules for generating a comma between <title> and <note> as sometimes there is an unnecessary comma [e.g. http://medieval-qa.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/catalog/manuscript_1591 part 1 item 1]. May need some XML modifications

I've had a go at the fourth of those still-live issues. I've made a change
affecting 300 manuscripts that tightens the rules for inserting a comma so that:

  • The title and note must be adjacent
  • The first non-whitespace character must not be an opening bracket, uppercase letter of the English alphabet, or comma
  • The note must not start with an lb element
