Removing the symlink and moving the wp-content folder does NOT work out of the box. Further work was required, and I wasn’t prepared to go down that rabbit-hole.
Instead the problem was already solved elsewhere, the fix was to manually set these properties in the wp-config.php
define('WP_CONTENT_DIR', '/bitnami/wordpress/wp-content');
define('WP_CONTENT_URL', 'https://example.com/wp-content');
