Reservation Funnel (Pre-Commitment)

To validate if we can reach the 40% crowdfunding goal before launching, create a reservation funnel so that people can pay $1 to "pre-order" their tree at an Early Bird discount.

Early Bird Tree Donations (ONLY 3 DAYS)

At least 30 ($750) and at most 50 ($1,250) tree donations from Backers.

This will guarantee that we have the right number of plants for a 100ft2 Miyawaki forest.

Purchase first round of Plants

All plants, trees, etc. will be purchased from local nurseries throughout the Antelope Valley region. This requires at least a 50% mark-up based upon our previous year.

For full transparency, last year I made 100% of all proceeds from our glampsite--the Starry Night Skoolie--go toward the plants, the watering, and the upkeep of the garden/bus.

This was entirely NOT sustainable ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Which is why I'm here at Buildspace, trying to build a sustainable nonprofit revenue model.

This time around, I'm applying the same principle with tree donations, with the following logic:

  • Supporters want a connection to the trees they plant
  • Supporters want to be able to "check-in" on progress

The 50% mark-up means Milkweed (a monarch butterfly favorite) that costs $7 will be "marked up" at $10.50.

I still need to factor in sales tax (nonprofits do have to pay sales tax, but this is dependent on a lot) in order to properly price everything without going under.

As I'm working out the details of pricing, I want to encourage people to share their feedback. We will also be looking into buying bulk seed and starting our own seed trays.

"Plants are expensive!" Yes, they absolutely are...but entirely worth it ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฒ

Crowdfunding Campaign

This will be delayed if we do not have at least 40% committed to funding the goal.

GOAL: $5,000
I originally made this $4,000 a few weeks ago. After making a detailed spreadsheet/budget and running the numbers, I calculated this would cost us around ~$3,925. I've learned from experience to pad quotes and expenses (tough lesson), so I bumped it up by 1K to account for any errors.

PRE-COMMITMENT: $2,000
Still trying to figure out how to validate the pre-commitment from supporters.

Organize Planting List

We are following the Miyawaki Forest method.

We will focus on Autumn / Late Summer plants (since our planting schedule begins in September/October).

This includes canopy trees, understory trees, cover crops, and vegetables.
